Science Technician

Are you a practical, organised and reliable Science Technician looking for a permanent position within a busy secondary school? A well-established Secondary School in Leicester is looking for someone who can provide high-quality technical support across the Science department and help ensure practical lessons run safely and effectively.

This is a hands-on role working closely with teachers across Biology, Chemistry and Physics. You will be responsible for preparing equipment, materials and practical resources before lessons, maintaining laboratory spaces and ensuring the department has the resources it needs throughout the academic year.

The role will suit someone who enjoys working behind the scenes to make practical learning possible. Education technicians typically prepare and check equipment, support teachers and students during practical lessons, manage stock and maintain safe working environments.

You will be expected to prepare apparatus, chemicals and other materials for practical activities, set up demonstrations and experiments, and clear equipment away afterwards. You will also maintain laboratory equipment, identify items requiring repair or replacement and keep preparation areas and storage facilities organised.

The successful candidate will have an organised approach to stock control. You will monitor consumables and equipment, maintain inventory records and assist with ordering resources when required. You will also help ensure chemicals and other potentially hazardous materials are stored, handled and disposed of appropriately.

Health and safety will be a particularly important part of the position. The successful candidate will need to follow school procedures and relevant laboratory safety requirements, maintain appropriate records and report any concerns promptly. Current school Science Technician roles commonly include equipment preparation, stock management, maintenance, safe chemical handling and laboratory safety checks.

There will also be opportunities to support practical examinations, science clubs, STEM activities, open evenings and departmental events.

Science Technician - Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

• Preparing apparatus, chemicals and materials for practical lessons

• Setting up and clearing away experiments and demonstrations

• Supporting Biology, Chemistry and Physics lessons

• Assisting teachers with practical activities

• Preparing specialist equipment where required

• Checking equipment before use

• Maintaining laboratory equipment and resources

• Carrying out routine cleaning and basic maintenance

• Monitoring stock levels and maintaining inventories

• Assisting with purchase orders and ordering supplies

• Receiving and storing deliveries

• Ensuring chemicals and equipment are stored appropriately

• Supporting safe disposal of laboratory waste

• Maintaining clean, organised preparation rooms

• Carrying out appropriate safety checks

• Reporting damaged or faulty equipment

• Supporting GCSE and A-Level practical assessments where required

• Assisting with science clubs and enrichment activities

• Helping prepare demonstrations and departmental events

• Maintaining accurate records relating to equipment, stock and safety

You will need to be proactive and able to anticipate what teachers will need. Good communication with teaching staff will be essential, particularly when several practical lessons are taking place during the same day.

Science Technician - Experience and Qualifications

The school is looking for someone with:

• Previous Science Technician or laboratory experience

• Science-related qualification desirable

• Practical knowledge of Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics

• Experience handling laboratory equipment

• Understanding of laboratory health and safety

• Knowledge of COSHH procedures desirable

• Strong organisational and time-management skills

• Excellent attention to detail

• Ability to manage several requests and deadlines

• Good IT and record-keeping skills

• Strong communication and teamwork

• Ability to work independently and use initiative

• Commitment to safeguarding and student welfare

Previous experience within a secondary school would be advantageous, although candidates with relevant laboratory experience from colleges, universities, research environments, healthcare or industry will also be considered.

The Science Department

The Science department provides students with regular opportunities to learn through practical investigation.

The successful technician will be an important part of making those opportunities possible. You will work alongside teachers to ensure experiments are properly prepared, equipment is safe and laboratories are ready for lessons.
