A large and ambitious 11–16 secondary school in Leicester is seeking an experienced and driven Head of Geography to lead its popular Humanities faculty. Located in a diverse and fast-growing part of the city, the school serves a vibrant community and has developed a strong reputation for raising attainment through structured curriculum design, consistent behaviour systems and focused leadership.

Geography is a well-established and valued subject within the school, with strong GCSE uptake and a curriculum that balances physical and human geography in a rigorous, knowledge-rich sequence.

The Role

As Head of Geography, you will take strategic responsibility for curriculum planning, staff development and outcomes within the department. You will lead a small but committed team of subject specialists, ensuring consistency of teaching, clear assessment systems and strong subject knowledge across Key Stages 3 and 4. The department follows a carefully sequenced curriculum that incorporates local case studies — including urban regeneration, migration patterns and environmental change — alongside global themes such as climate systems, development and tectonic hazards.

You will:

  • Oversee curriculum planning and resource development
  • Monitor assessment data and drive targeted intervention
  • Coach and develop members of the Geography team
  • Ensure high standards of behaviour and academic challenge
  • Lead departmental CPD and contribute to whole-school improvement
  • Promote fieldwork opportunities and geographical enrichment

There is genuine opportunity to shape the future direction of the subject and build further GCSE uptake.

The School

The school operates from a modern campus with a dedicated Humanities corridor and interactive teaching spaces. Behaviour systems are structured and consistently applied, allowing teaching staff to focus on high-quality instruction. Leadership is ambitious but pragmatic, with a clear improvement plan and a strong focus on instructional coaching. Staff wellbeing is actively considered, and workload policies are designed to reduce unnecessary administrative burden. The student body reflects Leicester’s rich cultural diversity, and the school prides itself on inclusivity, high expectations and strong pastoral support.

About You

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Proven experience teaching Geography to GCSE level
  • Previous middle leadership experience (or readiness to step into leadership)
  • Strong understanding of curriculum sequencing and assessment
  • Ability to motivate and develop a team
  • Commitment to inclusive, ambitious teaching

What’s on Offer

  • Leadership allowance in line with experience
  • Supportive senior leadership team
  • Structured CPD and leadership development
  • Well-established department with solid GCSE uptake
  • Clear strategic direction and room to shape the subject

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Geography teacher ready to take ownership of a department and build on an already strong foundation. If you are a confident and forward-thinking Geography leader looking to make a meaningful impact within a dynamic Leicester secondary school, we would welcome your CV.
