Are you an experienced, hands-on Caretaker who enjoys making a visible difference to a school environment? A welcoming primary school in Kingston is recruiting a dedicated Caretaker to lead daily site operations from January 2026. The Kingston Caretaker role will be a varied and autonomous position: you will manage daily opening and closing, routine maintenance, simple repairs and grounds upkeep, ensuring that staff and pupils work in a safe, comfortable environment.
Full handover and health & safety induction will be provided prior to January 2026 so the Caretaker can begin the role ready and supported for January 2026.
What you will do day-to-day:
- Carry out pre-opening and end-of-day checks
- Respond to maintenance requests
- Maintain plant rooms and heating systems where relevant
- Arrange and supervise contractor visits
- Keep the site safe and presentable
- Assist with setting up for school events
- Support lettings and maintain stock of consumables
In Kingston, the Caretaker will be part of a small, cooperative staff team who value reliability and practical problem-solving.
Role responsibilities:
- Open and secure school premises, perform safety checks and maintain site records
- Complete basic maintenance tasks (decorating, joinery, plumbing fixes) and escalate major faults
- Maintain external areas, clear seasonal debris and ensure accessible routes throughout Kingston
- Oversee contractors, manage deliveries and maintain inventories of equipment and cleaning supplies
- Provide on-the-day support for events, lettings and emergency situations; liaise with senior staff about site priorities
Person specification:
- Previous caretaking, site or facilities experience with practical maintenance skills
- Knowledge of basic plumbing/electrical tasks, health & safety procedures and COSHH awareness
- Organised, adaptable and able to manage competing priorities across the Kingston site
- Ready to start January 2026 and attend induction and handover before January 2026
