A successful and forward-thinking secondary school in Ipswich is seeking a Design & Technology Technician to join their department from January. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys hands-on technical work, values a structured workshop environment, and wants to play a key role in helping students bring creative ideas to life.

About the Role

As the DT Technician, you will work closely with teachers across Product Design, Resistant Materials, Engineering, and Graphics to ensure that practical lessons run safely, efficiently, and to a high standard. You will be responsible for preparing, maintaining, and storing a wide range of materials and equipment used in day-to-day lessons, coursework projects, and extracurricular activities.

Key duties include:

  • Preparing tools, materials, and resources for KS3–KS4 practical lessons
  • Ensuring all workshop machinery is maintained and safe to use (after appropriate training if required)
  • Supporting students during practical tasks by providing guidance on safe tool use and correct procedures
  • Maintaining stock levels, organising ordering, and monitoring usage of consumables
  • Managing the safe storage and handling of tools, adhesives, metals, woods, plastics, textiles, and general workshop equipment
  • Supporting staff with CAD/CAM resources, including laser cutters, 3D printers, and CNC equipment
  • Helping with displays, coursework preparation, and the organisation of student project work
  • Ensuring compliance with all Health & Safety policies, including carrying out regular risk assessments and maintaining a clean, organised workspace

This role is ideal for someone who is practical, positive, and capable of managing both routine and more complex workshop tasks with confidence.

School Information

The school has a strong reputation for high standards, excellent behaviour, and a welcoming staff culture built on collaboration and mutual support. The Design & Technology department is particularly well-regarded and benefits from:

  • Modern workshops with updated machinery
  • A dedicated CAD/CAM suite
  • Specialist equipment including 3D printers, laser cutters, scroll saws, and metalworking tools
  • Supportive teaching staff who value technician expertise
  • A positive, structured working environment with clear routines and expectations

Staff wellbeing is taken seriously, with leadership providing regular communication, access to development opportunities, and a culture where support staff are respected for the pivotal role they play. • Practical experience in workshop environments or similar technical roles
  • Confidence using tools, machinery, and manual equipment (training provided where needed)
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
  • A positive, proactive approach to teamwork and student support
  • A good understanding of Health & Safety requirements or willingness to undertake training

Whether you come from a technical background, makerspace environment, engineering setting, or previous school role, the school welcomes applications from adaptable individuals with the right mindset and work ethic.
