Facilities Manager Role in a Preparatory School

A well-established Preparatory School in Hertford is seeking to appoint an experienced and proactive Facilities Manager to oversee the day-to-day management of its estate from an immediate start. About the Role

The successful candidate will take responsibility for the operational management of the school's buildings and grounds, ensuring compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation and statutory requirements.

You will oversee planned and reactive maintenance, manage external contractors, monitor site security, and coordinate facilities projects across the campus. The role also involves managing maintenance budgets, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting the smooth day-to-day operation of the school.

This is a hands-on leadership position requiring excellent organisational skills, strong technical knowledge, and the ability to build positive working relationships with staff, contractors, and external agencies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the maintenance and development of the school estate

  • Manage planned preventative and reactive maintenance programmes

  • Ensure compliance with health and safety, fire safety, and statutory regulations

  • Manage site security, access control, and emergency procedures

  • Coordinate and supervise external contractors and service providers

  • Monitor facilities budgets and procurement processes

  • Support capital improvement and refurbishment projects

  • Ensure the school site remains safe, secure, and well presented at all times

Candidate Requirements

Essential Requirements

  • Previous experience in facilities, estates, or site management

  • Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation and statutory compliance

  • Experience managing contractors and maintenance programmes

  • Excellent organisational, communication, and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to prioritise workloads and respond effectively to operational issues

Desirable

  • IOSH or NEBOSH Health & Safety qualification

  • Experience working within a school or educational environment

  • Knowledge of compliance relating to fire safety, asbestos, and building management

  • Experience managing facilities budgets and capital projects
