English Teaching Role in a Foundation School

A successful Foundation School in Hertford is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and inspirational English Teacher to join its thriving English department from September. About the Role

You will teach English Language and English Literature across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4, and Key Stage 5, delivering engaging lessons that foster a passion for reading, writing, and critical thinking.

Students study a diverse range of texts, including Shakespeare, poetry, modern literature, and non-fiction, developing strong analytical, interpretative, and creative writing skills.

You will prepare students for GCSE and A-Level examinations, supporting them in achieving excellent outcomes and progressing to higher education and a wide variety of future careers.

Working as part of a collaborative and successful department, you will contribute to curriculum development, literacy initiatives, and enrichment activities that promote a culture of reading across the school.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach English Language and English Literature across KS3, KS4, and KS5

  • Deliver engaging and academically challenging lessons

  • Prepare students for GCSE and A-Level examinations

  • Develop students’ analytical, interpretative, and writing skills

  • Assess student work and provide detailed, constructive feedback

  • Monitor progress and implement targeted intervention strategies

  • Contribute to curriculum planning and departmental development

  • Support literacy programmes, reading initiatives, and enrichment activities

Candidate Requirements

Essential Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

  • Experience teaching English at secondary level

  • Ability to teach KS3 and KS4 confidently

  • Strong subject knowledge in English Language and Literature

  • Excellent classroom management and communication skills

Desirable

  • Experience teaching A-Level English

  • Experience working within a Foundation School or similar setting

  • Ability to contribute to literacy and reading initiatives

  • Strong track record of examination success and pupil progress
