The Opportunity

Enfield is a borough of rich diversity and significant transformation, situated as a vital gateway between the urban energy of North London and the green corridors of Hertfordshire. We are seeking a dedicated and resilient Attendance Officer to join an Ofsted-rated 'Outstanding' secondary academy. In this role, you will be the frontline champion for student presence, understanding that consistent attendance is the fundamental prerequisite for social mobility and academic achievement in one of London’s most vibrant communities.

The Role & Safeguarding Culture

You will join a robust Pastoral and Safeguarding team where student welfare and engagement are prioritised as the foundation of the academy's success. The role involves a sophisticated blend of data analysis and interpersonal diplomacy, working to dismantle the barriers that prevent students from accessing their education. As an 'Outstanding' setting, we utilise proactive, early-intervention strategies rather than reactive measures, fostering a culture where every student feels a deep sense of belonging and accountability. We maintain strong partnerships with Enfield’s Local Authority services and external support agencies to ensure a holistic approach to student wellbeing and family engagement.

Core Responsibilities

  • Strategic Monitoring: Managing the academy’s attendance systems (such as SIMS or Arbor) to maintain accurate daily registers and identify patterns of persistent absence or lateness.
  • Direct Intervention: Conducting home visits and leading meetings with parents and carers to discuss attendance concerns, providing a bridge between the home and the academy environment.
  • Data Analysis: Producing detailed attendance reports for the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and Governors, identifying trends across different year groups and student demographics to inform targeted interventions.
  • Legal Compliance: Managing the administrative process for Fixed Penalty Notices and working closely with the Education Welfare Officer (EWO) to ensure all statutory requirements are met.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Developing and leading academy-wide initiatives and assemblies that celebrate high attendance and motivate students to take pride in their punctuality.

The Successful Candidate

We are looking for a professional who possesses 'iron-fist-in-velvet-glove' diplomacy—firm on standards but empathetic to the complexities of modern family life. Requirements include:

  • Professional Experience: A background in education, social work, or a similar local authority role with a proven track record of improving attendance or engagement.
  • Communication Excellence: The ability to navigate difficult conversations with sensitivity and authority, building trust with families from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Analytical Proficiency: Strong IT skills and the ability to interpret complex data sets to drive strategic decision-making.
  • Resilience & Initiative: A proactive problem-solver who can work independently in the community and remain calm under pressure.

Why Join Us?

The chance to work in an 'Outstanding' environment where student behaviour is exemplary and the attendance team is highly valued by teaching staff and leadership alike. Comprehensive professional development and training in safeguarding, legal procedures, and pastoral care. The opportunity to work in Enfield—a borough offering a unique mix of historic market-town charm, expansive parklands, and excellent transport links into Central London. A prestigious professional community that values persistence, empathy, and the belief that every day in school counts towards a student’s future.
