CORE PURPOSE

We require an inspiring, highly practical Food Technology Teacher to deliver outstanding food preparation, nutrition, and hospitality instruction across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. Operating within a vibrant, oversubscribed academy with a strong focus on technical and creative excellence, the successful candidate will facilitate a structured, hands-on curriculum designed to foster deep conceptual understanding of food science, culinary skills, dietary health, and food safety, preparing all pupils thoroughly for exceptional outcomes in terminal GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition or equivalent technical public examinations.

THE SCHOOL

Our academy is dedicated to cultivating an ambitious, creative, and highly purposeful learning environment where vocational skill and academic progress go hand in hand. As a pioneering school with an excellent local reputation and a strong community ethos, we blend rigorous academic and behavioural standards with a supportive, inclusive atmosphere. The Design and Technology department operates out of modern, fully equipped catering suites and is characterized by a culture of technical precision, shared high-quality resources, and collaborative planning. We operate a highly supportive, centralized behaviour system that minimizes classroom disruption, allowing teachers to focus entirely on delivering high-impact, deeply engaging practical and theoretical culinary instruction to enthusiastic learners.

KEY TASKS & DAILY OPERATIONS

  • Rigorous & Practical-Led Instruction: Plan, resource, and deliver high-impact Food Technology lessons across all attainment pathways, systematically embedding live culinary demonstrations, knife skills coaching, and safe kitchen practices to master complex food preparation techniques.

  • Food Science & Nutritional Scaffolding: Train pupils to a high technical standard in analyzing the functional properties of ingredients (such as gelatinization, emulsification, and aeration) and understanding nutritional profiles, utilizing structured science templates and explicit food-text vocabulary instruction.

  • GCSE & Technical Performance Optimization: Guide Year 11 examination cohorts meticulously through the rigorous demands of non-examination assessments (NEA food investigations and preparation tasks) and written terminal papers, utilizing diagnostic tracking to maximize high-grade retention.

  • Safe & Accessible Kitchen Management: Enforce impeccable health, safety, and hygiene standards (including food storage, allergen management, and rigorous cleaning regimes) across all practical sessions, implementing targeted scaffolding to ensure kitchen workspaces are accessible and challenging for all pupils.

  • Inclusive Pastoral Support: Fulfil full form tutor responsibilities within an established year group structure, supporting pupil wellbeing, managing daily registration routines, and maintaining proactive, positive communication with Black Country families.

PROFILE REQUIREMENTS

  • Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or a recognised equivalent teaching credential, paired with a strong honours degree in Food Technology, Food and Nutrition, Home Economics, Hospitality and Catering, or a closely related technical discipline.

  • Pedagogical Capability: A proven track record or clear capacity to deliver strong progress metrics and exceptional performance outcomes in terminal public GCSE or vocational specifications through highly structured, systematic, and explicit food pedagogy.

  • Practical & Supportive Ethos: An unwavering commitment to comprehensive and vocational education, possessing the exceptional communication skills, patience, and organizational dexterity required to manage a busy practical kitchen while building culinary confidence in pupils of all backgrounds.

REGIONAL CONTEXT

  • A Historic Industrial Heartland Driving Creative and Technical Skills: Based in the industrial hub of Dudley, the school capitalizes on a powerful Black Country identity deeply rooted in its world-famous engineering, manufacturing, and culinary heritage. Positioned within an area undergoing active economic regeneration and infrastructure investment, the borough provides a fantastic, real-world backdrop for studying food production, large-scale hospitality logistics, and manufacturing techniques, connecting classroom food science directly to regional enterprise, commercial hospitality networks, and future professional culinary paths across the West Midlands.

  • Connectivity & Infrastructure: The campus benefits from premium West Midlands transport infrastructure, offering straightforward road commuting via the strategic M5 motorway corridor (Junctions 2 and 3), the A4123 Birmingham New Road, and the A461. Public transit networks operate seamlessly via comprehensive local bus networks and the expanding West Midlands Metro tram infrastructure, while nearby rail hubs—such as Dudley Port and Cradley Heath—provide frequent services that connect the school effortlessly to Birmingham New Street, Wolverhampton, Stourbridge, and Walsall.
