Music Teacher Role in an Outstanding Secondary School

An Outstanding Secondary School in Derby is seeking to appoint a passionate and creative Music Teacher to join its thriving Performing Arts department from September. About the Role

The successful candidate will teach Music across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4, and Key Stage 5, delivering engaging practical and theoretical lessons that inspire students to develop as musicians, composers, and performers.

Students follow a broad curriculum covering performance, composition, music theory, listening and appraising, music technology, and a range of styles and genres. You will prepare students for GCSE and A-Level Music or Music Technology qualifications while encouraging participation in ensemble work, school productions, and wider musical experiences.

You will also contribute to the school’s extensive extracurricular programme, including choirs, bands, orchestras, concerts, performances, and enrichment opportunities that celebrate musical talent across the school community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach Music across KS3, KS4, and KS5

  • Deliver engaging practical and theory-based lessons

  • Prepare students for GCSE and A-Level Music / Music Technology examinations

  • Develop students’ performance, composition, and listening skills

  • Assess progress and provide high-quality, constructive feedback

  • Contribute to curriculum planning and departmental development

  • Lead and support extracurricular music ensembles and performances

  • Foster creativity, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation of music

Candidate Requirements

Essential Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

  • Experience teaching Music at secondary level

  • Ability to teach KS3 and KS4 confidently

  • Strong subject knowledge in Music performance and theory

  • Excellent classroom and ensemble management skills

Desirable

  • Experience teaching A-Level Music or Music Technology

  • Ability to lead ensembles, choirs, or school productions

  • Experience using music technology and recording software

  • A proven track record of delivering strong student outcomes
