Caretaker

A welcoming Primary School in York is looking for a reliable, practical and hardworking Caretaker to join its premises team on a full-time, permanent basis.

This is a hands-on role for someone who takes genuine pride in maintaining a school site and understands the importance of providing children and staff with a safe, secure and welcoming environment every day.

Working closely with the Headteacher and School Business Manager, you will take responsibility for the day-to-day upkeep of the school buildings and grounds. Your duties will include carrying out regular site inspections, responding to maintenance requests, completing minor repairs and ensuring classrooms, corridors, offices and communal areas are kept in good working order.

You will also be responsible for opening and securing the school site, checking doors and access points, monitoring security systems and reporting any concerns promptly. The role will involve supporting contractors when they attend the school, arranging access and checking that maintenance work has been completed appropriately.

The Caretaker will also assist with preparing the school for assemblies, parents' evenings, performances, meetings and other events. This may involve setting up rooms, moving furniture and equipment and ensuring facilities are ready for staff, pupils and visitors.

There will also be responsibility for outdoor areas, including checking paths, playgrounds and other communal spaces and reporting or addressing issues that could present a safety concern.

School Information

This is a well-established Primary School in York with a strong commitment to creating a positive and supportive environment for children to learn and develop.

The school places great importance on high standards, pupil wellbeing and positive relationships between children, staff and families.

Pupils are encouraged to become confident and independent learners, with a broad curriculum that supports both academic achievement and personal development.

The school operates as a close-knit community, and support staff play an important role in ensuring the school runs effectively each day.

You will work alongside teaching, administrative and leadership colleagues and will be expected to maintain a high standard across the site.

Caretaker - Experience and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

Previous Caretaker, Maintenance or Facilities experience

Good practical repair and maintenance skills

Understanding of basic health and safety procedures

Ability to identify potential hazards

Good organisational skills

Ability to work independently

Reliable and flexible approach

Professional attitude

Commitment to providing a safe environment for children and staff

Previous experience within a school would be advantageous, although candidates from commercial, residential, facilities or property maintenance backgrounds will also be considered where they have relevant practical experience.

The successful candidate will become an important member of the school's wider support team. You will have regular contact with teaching staff, pupils, parents, visitors and contractors, so a professional and approachable manner is essential.

The role is varied and no two days are likely to be exactly the same. You may spend part of the day completing planned maintenance before responding to an unexpected issue or preparing an area for a school event.

The school is looking for someone who takes ownership of their responsibilities, uses initiative and is committed to maintaining a high standard across the entire site.

The salary for this Caretaker position will be dependent on experience.
