Caretaker – Primary School – Brent

Start Date: As soon as possible
Contract: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: Paid to scale

We are working with a welcoming and well-established primary school in Brent, London, that is looking to appoint a reliable and practical Caretaker to join its premises team.

The successful candidate will take an active role in maintaining the school site, ensuring that buildings, classrooms, outdoor areas and facilities remain safe, secure and presentable. This is an important position within the school, as the condition and security of the site have a direct impact on pupils, staff and visitors every day.

The role would suit someone who is hands-on, responsible and able to work independently. You will need to take pride in the environment around you, identify issues before they become larger problems and respond appropriately when urgent maintenance or site matters arise.

School Information

This is a well-established primary school in Brent with a strong commitment to providing pupils with a safe, stimulating and inclusive environment. The school recognises the importance of creating a setting where children feel secure and confident, both inside the classroom and across the wider school site.

The school has a positive and community-focused ethos, with staff working together to support pupils' academic progress, wellbeing and personal development. High standards are expected across the school, including in relation to the condition, cleanliness and safety of the premises.

The successful Caretaker will become an important part of the wider support team. The role will involve regular contact with school leaders, teachers, office staff, contractors, parents and visitors, meaning a professional and approachable manner is important.

The school is looking for someone who is dependable and takes ownership of their responsibilities. The successful candidate will be trusted to work proactively, maintain appropriate records and ensure that concerns are communicated quickly.

Premises Team

The Caretaker will be responsible for supporting the daily running of the school site and ensuring that the environment remains safe and operational.

This will include carrying out routine site checks, dealing with minor repairs, monitoring the condition of facilities, supporting security arrangements and assisting with the set-up of school activities.

The successful candidate should be comfortable working independently while also knowing when to seek assistance from senior staff, contractors or specialist services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carrying out regular checks of school buildings and grounds.

  • Ensuring the school site remains safe, secure and well maintained.

  • Completing minor repairs and maintenance tasks where appropriate.

  • Reporting larger maintenance issues promptly.

  • Monitoring classrooms, corridors, offices, toilets, communal spaces and outdoor areas.

  • Supporting daily opening and closing procedures.

  • Ensuring appropriate site security is maintained.

  • Monitoring access to the premises and supporting visitor procedures.

  • Assisting contractors and maintenance professionals when they attend the school.

  • Ensuring contractors follow relevant site procedures.

  • Supporting health and safety checks across the premises.

  • Maintaining records relating to maintenance, inspections and repairs.

  • Responding quickly to urgent site issues.

  • Supporting the preparation of rooms for meetings, assemblies and school events.

  • Moving furniture and equipment when required.

  • Monitoring the general presentation of the school site.

  • Reporting issues relating to cleanliness, damage or safety.

  • Supporting deliveries and ensuring items are directed appropriately.

  • Checking that site equipment and materials are stored safely.

  • Assisting with waste and recycling arrangements where required.

  • Supporting seasonal tasks across the school grounds.

  • Liaising professionally with staff, contractors, visitors and members of the school community.

  • Following all school policies relating to safeguarding, health and safety and security.

  • Maintaining confidentiality and professionalism at all times.

Experience and Requirements

The ideal candidate will have previous experience in caretaking, maintenance, facilities, premises or another practical role. School experience would be beneficial but is not essential where the candidate can demonstrate strong transferable skills.

The school is looking for someone who is practical, trustworthy and capable of taking responsibility for the day-to-day condition of the site.

You should have a good eye for detail and be able to recognise when something needs attention. The ability to prioritise is particularly important because the school environment can change quickly and urgent issues may occasionally need to be addressed alongside routine tasks.

The successful candidate will ideally demonstrate:

  • Previous caretaking, premises, maintenance or facilities experience.

  • Practical maintenance skills.

  • Good awareness of health and safety.

  • Strong organisational ability.

  • Reliability and punctuality.

  • Good communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Ability to prioritise competing tasks.

  • A proactive approach to problem-solving.

  • Professional and approachable manner.

  • Confidence communicating with contractors and visitors.

  • Good attention to detail.

  • Commitment to maintaining high standards across the school site.

  • Willingness to support colleagues and the wider school community.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is a fundamental part of the school's work. The successful candidate will be expected to follow all safeguarding, site security and health and safety procedures and contribute to maintaining a safe environment for pupils.

All appropriate pre-employment checks will be completed before employment begins, including an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.

Application

This is an excellent opportunity for a practical and dependable individual who wants to build a long-term career within a primary school environment.

If you have the relevant experience and are available for an as soon as possible start, please send your CV as soon as possible for consideration.
