The leadership team strongly believes that behaviour in young children is closely linked to emotional wellbeing, communication skills, and early experiences. As such, the school has invested heavily in early intervention strategies, behaviour mentoring, and SEND support. With an increasing number of pupils across Nursery, Reception, and Key Stage 1 requiring additional behavioural and emotional support, the school is now seeking a dedicated Behaviour Mentor to join its pastoral team.
Purpose of the Role
The Behaviour Mentor will play a key role in supporting pupils who experience difficulties with emotional regulation, social interaction, behaviour for learning, or adapting to school routines. Pupils supported in this role may present with SEMH needs, ASD, ADHD, attachment difficulties, speech and language delays, or trauma-related behaviours. You will act as a consistent and trusted adult throughout the school day, supporting children in classrooms, during interventions, and at unstructured times. Through nurturing relationships and structured strategies, you will help pupils develop emotional awareness, resilience, and positive behaviour patterns.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide targeted 1:1 behavioural and emotional support
- Deliver structured small group interventions focusing on emotional literacy
- Support children within Nursery, Reception, and KS1 classrooms
- Assist pupils during transitions between activities and lessons
- Support behaviour during playtimes, lunchtimes, and other unstructured periods
- Implement individual behaviour support plans consistently
- Use play-based, restorative, and trauma-informed approaches
- Model positive behaviour and emotional regulation strategies
- Work closely with class teachers, EYFS practitioners, SENCO, and pastoral staff
- Observe, assess, and track pupil behaviour and emotional progress
- Maintain detailed records and written observations
- Contribute to review meetings and planning discussions
- Build strong, professional relationships with parents and carers
- Support safeguarding, child protection, and wellbeing procedures
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be calm, patient, and emotionally resilient, with a genuine passion for supporting young children. You will understand that challenging behaviour is often a form of communication and will respond with empathy, consistency, and professionalism. You should be able to demonstrate:
- Experience working with children in a Primary, Nursery, or EYFS setting
- A strong understanding of early childhood development
- Knowledge of SEND, SEMH, attachment, or trauma-informed practice
- A nurturing and consistent behaviour management style
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- The ability to remain calm in emotionally demanding situations
- A reflective and proactive approach to your practice
Relevant qualifications in childcare, education, psychology, youth work, or mental health are advantageous but not essential.
