Attendance Officer - Secondary School - Redbridge

Start Date: As soon as possible

Contract: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: Dependent on experience

Are you an organised and confident administrator who is passionate about supporting young people and improving school attendance? A successful Secondary School in the London Borough of Redbridge is looking for a dedicated Attendance Officer to join its pastoral and administration team on a full-time, permanent basis.

Attendance Officer

  • Attendance Officer Role

  • Full-time, Permanent

  • Redbridge

  • Immediate Start

  • Salary dependent on experience

The Attendance Officer will play a central role in monitoring and improving attendance across the school. You will work closely with senior leaders, Heads of Year, pastoral staff, parents and carers to identify attendance concerns early and put appropriate support in place.

The role requires someone who can work confidently with attendance information and communicate effectively with families. You will monitor daily registers, follow up unexplained absences and ensure attendance records are accurate and up to date.

You will be responsible for contacting parents and carers regarding absence and punctuality, identifying emerging attendance patterns and escalating concerns in line with school procedures. Where students require additional support, you will work with pastoral colleagues to develop appropriate attendance interventions.

The successful candidate will also assist with attendance meetings, prepare reports for senior leaders and maintain detailed records of actions taken. You may be required to liaise with external professionals and agencies where attendance concerns become more significant.

This position would suit someone who is calm, persistent and confident when having difficult conversations while remaining approachable and supportive. Building positive relationships with students and families will be an important part of the role.

School Information

This is a well-established Secondary School in the London Borough of Redbridge with a strong commitment to academic achievement, student wellbeing and personal development.

The school serves a diverse community and places considerable importance on ensuring every student has the opportunity to attend regularly, engage positively with education and achieve their potential.

Students are encouraged to develop independence, resilience and confidence, while staff work together to provide a consistent and supportive environment.

The school has a strong pastoral structure, with staff working collaboratively to identify barriers to learning and provide appropriate support. Attendance forms an important part of this wider pastoral approach.

The successful candidate will become part of a professional team that values communication, accurate record keeping and early intervention.

Attendance Officer - Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Monitoring daily student attendance

  • Checking and following up unexplained absences

  • Completing first-day contact procedures

  • Maintaining accurate attendance records

  • Monitoring lateness and persistent absence

  • Identifying patterns and trends within attendance data

  • Contacting parents and carers regarding attendance concerns

  • Arranging and supporting attendance meetings

  • Preparing attendance reports for senior leaders

  • Recording interventions and agreed actions

  • Working closely with Heads of Year and pastoral staff

  • Supporting safeguarding procedures where attendance raises concerns

  • Liaising with external agencies when appropriate

  • Supporting attendance improvement initiatives

  • Promoting good attendance and punctuality across the school

You will need to be comfortable working with confidential information and understand the importance of handling sensitive family circumstances professionally.

Attendance Officer - Experience and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous attendance, pastoral or administrative experience

  • Experience working within a school environment desirable

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Strong organisational and administrative abilities

  • Good attention to detail

  • Confidence working with attendance data

  • Good IT skills

  • Experience using SIMS, Arbor or Bromcom desirable

  • Ability to maintain accurate confidential records

  • Professional and resilient approach

  • Commitment to safeguarding and student wellbeing

The school would particularly welcome applications from candidates who have previously worked as an Attendance Officer, Pastoral Administrator, Family Support Worker or School Administrator.

Working Environment

You will work closely with pastoral leaders and administrative colleagues rather than operating in isolation. The school recognises that attendance issues can have different causes and therefore takes a supportive and individual approach when working with families.

The role offers the opportunity to make a genuine difference to students by helping remove barriers that prevent them from attending school regularly.

You will also have opportunities to develop your understanding of attendance systems, safeguarding procedures and wider pastoral support within a secondary school environment.
