As Customer Liaison Metallurgist, you will be responsible for providing technical support for Sheffield Stainless Rod & Bar (SSRB) by ensuring customer expectations are exceeded, along with supporting the business to achieve its operational and improvement targets. Primary focus of the position will be to support customers with general claims and with machinability performance, providing metallurgical expertise and on-site technical support/guidance.
A major element will be the development and promotion of the PRODEC brand, working closely with customers and commercial to drive market growth, improve customer satisfaction and strengthen Marcegaglia's reputation in machinable austenitic stainless steels.
Main Responsibilities:
- A key link between Commercial and Operations teams.
- Direct customer and supplier contact where required to support the technical customer/supplier relationships.
- Provide support and conduct customer visits across UK & Internationally to provide on-site metallurgical support on machinability topics, including tool life, surface finish and process optimization.
- Act as ambassador for the PRODEC brand, supporting its promotion and differentiation in the market, supporting sales teams during customer meetings, technical presentations and marketing events.
- Technical support to the Rod and Bar production with the goal of maximising yield and reducing the risk of defective material reaching the customer.
- Supporting from a technical/quality view the external hire working activities of SSRB, aiding the product growth of the long products business area.
- Investigating customer claims/concerns and ensuring root cause work is done thoroughly, corrective actions are agreed by all parties and are robust and auditing that the corrective actions are being adhered to.
- Providing prompt feedback on customer technical queries/enquiries and associated technical vetting activities.
- Review customer product specifications and integrate the requirements into SSRB's operating systems.
- Managing customer trials through the manufacturing process.
- Driving product development projects and activities.
- Support the IMS system where required to ensure documentation and process conformation to the relevant quality standards (ISO 9001 etc.).
Experience:
- Degree educated (or higher) in Metallurgy, Materials Science/Engineering or associated discipline.
- Strong understanding for austenitic stainless steel metallurgy and associated machinability.
- Experience in a technical customer facing role.
- Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Hands-on experience with machining operations or tooling environments is desirable.
- Knowledge of rod, rebar and bar production methods is an advantage.
- Flexible as required to fulfil the SSRB business objectives.
- Local and international travel is required with this role.
- Must have the ability to work on own initiative to meet principal accountabilities.
