Requirements

  • We are looking for someone with a degree or equivalent experience in Data Science, Data Engineering, Computer Science, Software Development, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • We require three or more years of professional experience in a data or information management team, in a data engineer, data scientist, developer, or similar role.
  • We need proficiency with Python and Jupyter Notebooks.
  • We require data pipeline design skills.
  • We are looking for knowledge of cloud platforms such as GCP, AWS, or Azure.
  • We require experience and understanding of CI/CD pipelines.
  • We are looking for project management experience and the ability to understand partner needs and requirements, particularly when working with non-technical clients.
  • We require collaborative code management using Git and Git Hub.
  • We value a desire to use skills and experience for humanitarian ends.
  • We value strong teamwork, leadership, or project management capability.
  • We value exceptional communication skills, adaptability, resilience, solution-oriented thinking, self-motivation, and strong organisation.

Responsibilities

  • We will work with technical staff and volunteers on different opportunities after onboarding.
  • We will allow volunteers to choose tasks and projects that fit their skillset and interests.
  • We may support external projects requiring a data engineer skillset, such as data pipeline automation, hazard exposure platforms, multi-risk models, and conflict incident reporting.
  • We will work with external partners such as UN agencies, international NGOs, and academic institutions.
  • We will conduct and automate data collection and processing scripts.
  • We will create and maintain optimal, performant data pipeline architectures, both internally and externally.
  • We will propose improvements to infrastructure, schemas, platforms, toolchains, and configurations.
  • We will assist in the automation, provision, and management of development environments, source code, build tools, pipelines, and deployments.
  • We will support ad hoc data processing during our emergency responses in collaboration with our GIS team.
  • We will support internal systems maintenance in collaboration with our IT Support Engineer.
  • We may attend and represent us at technical conferences.
  • We will train other volunteers or external organisations on data engineer tools and processes.
  • We expect volunteers to make themselves available for planned and emergency projects, remote or in person, as needed.
  • We expect volunteers to respond to deployment requests within required deadlines.
  • We expect volunteers to take part in training events and support a wide range of activities relevant to the role.
