A leading advanced engineering manufacturer is seeking an experienced Machine Shop Manager to oversee a high-performing CNC machining operation. The role will involve managing production, engineering support functions, operational performance, and team development, while driving improvements in productivity, quality, and manufacturing efficiency. This is a hands-on leadership position requiring strong technical knowledge, people management skills, and the ability to support both day-to-day operations and long-term manufacturing strategy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee the daily running of a large CNC machining department operating a range of multi-axis machine tools
  • Lead, develop, and support production supervisors, engineers, and machining personnel
  • Ensure production targets are achieved safely, efficiently, and in line with customer delivery requirements
  • Drive improvements in machine utilisation, workflow efficiency, and overall operational performance
  • Work closely with manufacturing engineering teams to improve machining methods, tooling strategies, and production processes
  • Monitor manufacturing output, labour utilisation, downtime, and production costs
  • Support capacity planning and scheduling activities to ensure smooth workflow across the department
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives throughout manufacturing
  • Review manufacturing issues and support root cause analysis and corrective actions
  • Support the introduction of new equipment, technology, and manufacturing processes
  • Maintain high standards of quality, housekeeping, and workplace organisation
  • Assist with recruitment, training, mentoring, and workforce development
  • Conduct performance reviews, manage attendance, and support employee development plans
  • Work closely with other departments including Planning, Quality, Purchasing, and Engineering to support wider business objectives
  • Prepare operational reports and performance updates for senior management
The Candidate
  • Apprentice trained or qualified within mechanical/manufacturing engineering
  • Proven experience managing CNC machining operations within a precision engineering or advanced manufacturing environment
  • Strong technical understanding of machining processes including milling, turning, and EDM operations
  • Experience managing production teams within a fast-paced manufacturing environment
  • Good understanding of manufacturing performance metrics, production planning, and continuous improvement
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills
  • Ability to motivate teams and drive operational improvements
  • Commercial awareness with the ability to balance quality, cost, and delivery objectives
  • Confident problem solver with a proactive and hands-on management style
  • Comfortable working with ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Office applications
