Our client is a technology-driven power engineering company specializing in high-voltage transmission solutions, particularly overhead transmission line (OHL) design and advanced insulation systems. The company combines engineering expertise with proprietary technologies, notably composite insulated cross arms (CICA), to deliver more efficient, cost-effective transmission solutions.
We are seeking an experienced Engineering Head – Transmission Line Design to lead our technical capability in the UK and support business growth in the transmission sector. This role combines technical leadership, client engagement, and solution development, working closely with the UK CEO to drive project opportunities and deliver innovative transmission solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Technical Leadership
- Lead transmission line (OHL) design activities across UK projects
- Provide technical direction on:
- Line routing and optimisation
- Conductor selection and uprating strategies
- Insulation coordination (including composite crossarm solutions)
- Electrical clearances, EMF and performance analysis
- Ensure compliance with UK standards (e.g. National Grid, SSE, SPEN requirements)
- Act as the technical lead in client meetings, supporting the UK CEO in business development
- Present engineering solutions to utilities, developers, and stakeholders
- Translate client requirements into practical technical solutions
- Support bid preparation, technical proposals, and solution positioning
- Drive the application of advanced solutions such as:
- Composite Insulated Cross Arms (CICA)
- Advanced/high-temperature conductors
- Adapt global technologies to UK market requirements
- Support pilot projects and technical validation with clients
- Lead early-stage engineering (feasibility, concept design)
- Review and guide detailed design outputs
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (structural, environmental, delivery)
- Build and lead a UK-based engineering team over time
- Establish design standards, processes, and best practices
- Mentor engineers and develop technical capability
Requirements
Must-Have:
- Based in the UK with legal working rights
- 10+ years’ experience in transmission line (OHL) design
- Strong experience with UK utilities (e.g. National Grid, SSE, SPEN, etc.)
- Hands-on experience with design tools (e.g. PLS-CADD, PLS-Tower)
- Strong understanding of UK standards and regulatory requirements
- Proven ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to clients
Key Capabilities:
- Strong technical depth combined with commercial awareness
- Comfortable in a client-facing role, not purely back-office design
- Ability to operate in a fast-growing and less structured environment
