Core Responsibilities

  • Inspect and service vehicles to the highest standards to eliminate the likelihood of unscheduled work or breakdowns.
  • Have specialist vehicle knowledge of several vehicle manufacturer types, focusing on light goods vehicles and light HGVs up to 7.5 tonnes.

Key Duties and Accountabilities

  • Inspect and service vehicles as part of both planned and unplanned maintenance.
  • Carry out comprehensive in-depth electrical, mechanical and hydraulic diagnosis of vehicle systems.
  • Maintain skill levels to the highest standard, keeping aware of current and future technology in vehicle maintenance.
  • Liaise with line managers regarding long-term vehicle concerns and ensure all work is completed and followed up until resolved.
  • Keep work area and protective clothing clean, tidy and fit for purpose while upholding the company image.
  • Observe a personal duty of care for the equipment and resources used in the course of work.
  • Carry out road tests on vehicles as required.

System and Policy Responsibilities

  • Be fully conversant with computerised fleet management systems for accurate input of information related to vehicle repair work.
  • Carry out comprehensive in-depth electrical, mechanical and hydraulic diagnosis of vehicle systems.

Working Conditions

This post operates in a team on a shift pattern, averaging 37.5 hours per week, predominantly working 4 days on / 4 days off. The shifts are 12 hours in length, operating from 06:00-18:00 or 12:00-00:00.

Work Experience / Achievements

The post holder must be experienced in maintaining cars, CDVs, passenger service vehicles and goods vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes.

Knowledge / Educational Achievements

  • Fully qualified motor vehicle technician with a recognised level of certification (e.g., City & Guilds Motor Vehicle Technician or NVQ level 2).
  • Specialist knowledge of motor vehicle electrical systems and mechanical components.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of computer-based vehicle diagnostic systems and ability to analyse and interpret information for appropriate repair options.
  • Ability to diagnose vehicle faults without access to diagnostic equipment.
  • Knowledge of vehicle legislation and Health & Safety legislation, demonstrating required PPE while carrying out duties.

Desirable

  • MOT Testing certificate.
  • Level 3 NVQ / C&G NEBOSH Certificate.
  • Knowledge of tail lift systems, their operation and repair.
  • LOLER testing experience.
  • Experience working with a Vehicle Fleet Management System.
  • Experience in a fleet management environment.

Other

Full UK manual driving licence. C1 driving licence entitlement is required; if not held, the test must be completed within 12 months of appointment.
