About the role
- A greenkeeper is a professional who maintains golf courses and sports grounds, including tasks like mowing turf, operating machinery, applying fertilizers, maintaining bunkers and landscaping, and adhering to health and safety protocols.
- Duties also involve setting flagsticks, moving tee markers, repairing equipment, and sometimes assisting with course design.
- This demanding role requires physical fitness, manual dexterity, and a strong work ethic, with work often including early mornings, weekends, and potential overtime.
Key Responsibilities
- Turf Maintenance: Mowing greens, fairways, and other areas; seeding, watering, fertilizing, and aerating turf.
- Course Upkeep: Raking bunkers, setting flagsticks, moving tee markers, and maintaining ponds and other landscaping features.
- Machinery Operation: Safely operating and maintaining hand tools, power equipment, and specialized machinery like sit-on mowers and tractors.
- Equipment Care: Performing minor repairs on equipment and maintaining its operational readiness.
- Health and Safety: Following all health and safety policies, using chemicals responsibly, and working safely with machinery and chemicals.
- Environmental Practices: Increasingly, maintaining courses in an environmentally sustainable and eco-friendly manner.
- Assistance with Design: Potentially helping in the design and construction of new course features like tees and bunkers.
Required Skills and Attributes
- Qualified greenkeepers with a minimum of 3 years golf course maintenance experience. Ideally experience gained on an 18-hole championship or tournament standard facility.
- Physical Fitness: Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy objects, as well as stand and walk for extended periods.
- Manual Dexterity: Hand-eye coordination and the ability to perform repetitive motions.
- Technical Skills: Competence in operating and maintaining various types of machinery and equipment.
- Attention to Detail: Constant focus and a commitment to high-quality work.
