The General Operative is responsible for the efficient, safe, and organized management of the Internal / external yard area. This role involves general laboring, inventory organization, loading/unloading vehicles, operating yard equipment, and maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and safety across the site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Yard Maintenance and Organization: Maintain the yard area in a clean, tidy, and orderly condition, ensuring all materials, equipment, and stock are stored correctly and safely. Conduct routine checks for hazards and report any maintenance or repair needs promptly. Manage waste and recycling operations within the yard.
  • Logistics and Inventory: Assist with the accurate loading and unloading of delivery vehicles using appropriate equipment (e.g., forklift, pallet truck). Ensure incoming and outgoing stock is correctly counted, checked against manifests, and documented. Prepare and stage materials and products for dispatch or for use by other departments. Carry out regular stock checks and report discrepancies to the supervisor.
  • Equipment Operation: Safely and competently operate relevant yard machinery, such as forklifts, telehandlers, or other mobile plant equipment (where licensed). Perform pre-use checks and basic maintenance on all assigned equipment.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhere strictly to all company health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures. Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times. Ensure all working practices comply with legal requirements and operational standards.
  • General Duties: Assist with general laboring tasks as required across the site. Support workshop and logistics teams.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Proven experience working in a yard, logistics, warehouse, or similar outdoor/industrial environment is preferred however not essential.
  • Valid certification or license to operate a counterbalance or reach forklift is highly desirable however not essential.
  • Strong commitment to safety and awareness of hazard recognition.
  • Physically fit and capable of heavy lifting and manual labor in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills for completing documentation and checking manifests.
  • Reliable, punctual, and flexible approach to working hours.
