We are seeking an experienced and proactive Senior Project Engineer (MEP) to support the delivery of complex Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health (MEP) packages across the HS2 programme. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating engineering, design, procurement, construction, testing, and commissioning activities to ensure the successful delivery of MEP systems within programme, budget, quality, and safety requirements. Working closely with design teams, construction teams, subcontractors, and client representatives, you will play a key role in driving project performance and technical excellence. This position is ideally suited to an engineer with experience in major infrastructure, rail, transportation, tunnelling, or large-scale building services projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Project Engineering & Delivery
- Manage the technical delivery of MEP engineering packages from design through to commissioning and handover.
- Coordinate engineering activities across mechanical, electrical, controls, and public health disciplines.
- Ensure project deliverables are achieved in accordance with programme, cost, quality, and safety objectives.
- Support Project Managers in the execution of project plans and delivery strategies.
- Monitor engineering progress and identify risks, opportunities, and mitigation measures.
- Design Management & Coordination
- Act as the interface between design consultants, engineering teams, construction teams, and client representatives.
- Review design deliverables to ensure compliance with project requirements and constructability principles.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary design reviews and technical workshops.
- Manage technical queries, design changes, and engineering approvals.
- Support BIM and digital engineering processes to ensure coordinated project delivery.
- Procurement & Supply Chain Management
- Support procurement activities including technical evaluations and supplier selection.
- Review technical submissions, material approvals, and vendor documentation.
- Coordinate equipment procurement schedules to align with project programmes.
- Manage engineering interfaces with suppliers and specialist subcontractors.
- Construction Support
- Provide technical support to site teams during installation and construction activities.
- Review method statements, risk assessments, and installation procedures.
- Assist in resolving site-based engineering and coordination issues.
- Conduct site inspections and quality assurance reviews.
- Ensure engineering works are delivered in accordance with approved designs and specifications.
- Testing, Commissioning & Handover
- Support the planning and execution of testing and commissioning activities.
- Review commissioning documentation, test procedures, and completion records.
- Coordinate FAT, SAT, integrated systems testing, and operational readiness activities.
- Assist in achieving successful system handover and client acceptance.
- Ensure all as-built documentation and operation and maintenance manuals are completed.
- Commercial & Programme Management
- Support project commercial teams in managing engineering-related costs and change control.
- Assist with the assessment of variations, compensation events, and technical impacts.
- Monitor project progress against key milestones and reporting requirements.
- Identify opportunities for value engineering and continuous improvement.
- Stakeholder Management
- Develop effective working relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
- Attend project meetings and provide technical and progress updates.
- Represent the engineering team in client and stakeholder discussions.
- Support project reporting and governance requirements.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Essential
- Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Minimum 5-10 years' experience delivering MEP projects within rail, infrastructure, construction, transportation, or building services sectors.
- Strong understanding of:
- Mechanical and electrical building services systems
- Design and construction processes
- Testing and commissioning methodologies
- Engineering assurance and quality management
- Health and safety requirements within construction environments
- Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering activities.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and engineering documentation.

Desirable
- Previous experience on HS2, Network Rail, Crossrail, London Underground, or major infrastructure projects.
- Professional membership with a recognised institution (IET, IMechE, CIBSE, ICE, etc.).
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status, or working towards accreditation.
- Knowledge of NEC contracts and infrastructure delivery models.
- Experience with BIM, Revit, Navisworks, and Common Data Environments (CDE).
- Understanding of rail systems integration and MEICA delivery processes.
