The Opportunity
MandM is evolving how we harness the power of data, bridging the gap between core infrastructure and cutting-edge data science initiatives. We are looking for an Analytics Engineer who will report directly to our Analytics Manager and act as the driving force behind our data transformation and modelling practices. This is a role with true ownership. You will deep-dive into our data ecosystem, taking raw data and turning it into high-performing, clean, and reliable pipelines. If you love writing advanced SQL, want the autonomy to introduce modern data tools (like dbt), and are excited to help optimise workflows and support machine learning projects, this is the perfect opportunity to make a massive impact from day one.
Who Are we?
MandM is one of the biggest employers in Herefordshire and one of Europe’s leading online, off-price retailers, selling branded Fashion, Sport & Outdoor products for Men, Women and Children. We offer our customers fantastic value by partnering with companies who we have built long term relationships with, enabling us to offer our customers big household names and up-and-coming brands, giving fantastic value all year round. We are located in the heart of Hereford City Centre in our brand new, state of the art office.
More than a role
- Giving Back: 2 days paid volunteering to support a cause you care about
- Career Growth: Opportunity to grow
- Staff Discounts: Stay stylish with our exclusive discounts.
- Generous Holiday Allowance: Enjoy 5 weeks of well-deserved breaks. You even have the option to buy an extra week
- Birthday Delight: Take your special day off to celebrate YOU
The Role Scope
Reporting directly to the Analytics Manager, you will lead the charge in making our data pipelines work smarter and better. While this role sits on the engineering side of data, it requires a strong analytical mindset. You will navigate our Google Cloud Platform (GCP) ecosystem, evaluating and redesigning workflows to support downstream business intelligence and machine learning models. You don't need to be a software developer, but you do need to be passionate about clean code, robust data modelling, and data reliability.
Role key responsibilities
- Transform raw, complex data into clean, well-tested, and fully documented datasets that empower downstream analytics and business intelligence.
- Evaluate, redesign, and continuously improve existing data workflows to maximise efficiency, performance, and scalability.
- Champion modern data engineering best practices, helping the team introduce and implement tools like dbt or Dataform to establish a single source of truth.
- Partner closely with Data Scientists to help operationalise, deploy, and maintain machine learning and AI models in stable production environments.
- Utilize Python to build data manipulation scripts that transition automated data projects out of development environments into production.
- Take a lead role in shaping, implementing, and maintaining robust alerting and monitoring solutions to guarantee data quality and system health.
- Help track data reliability and model drift detection to ensure accuracy for the wider business.
- Work alongside data scientists, data engineers, the technology team, and business stakeholders to ensure our data infrastructure aligns with strategic retail goals.
- Manage all person-identifiable data with due care and diligence, ensuring compliance with Data Protection and Privacy Policies.
About You
- Advanced SQL & Data Modelling: You are an expert at writing highly optimised, complex SQL queries and have a proven track record of structuring messy data into clean schemas.
- dbt or Dataform Exposure: You understand data transformation tools and best practices. If you already have a dbt accreditation or experience building with it, that’s a massive bonus!
- Core Programming: Comfort writing basic Python scripts (e.g., using Pandas) for data manipulation and pipeline development.
- Cloud Ecosystems: Hands-on experience working within cloud environments. Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or BigQuery is highly advantageous.
- Engineering Principles: A solid understanding of git/version control, data cleaning techniques, and data quality checks.
- Industry Agnostic: We care about your technical data skills, not your industry background—retail experience is not required.
- Experience with workflow orchestration tools like Dataiku or Apache Airflow.
Why Join MandM?
- A Clean Canvas: Because this is a brand-new role under the Analytics Manager, you get to help make our pipelines work better, without the headache of fixing decades of old legacy code.
- Technical Environment: You’ll be working closely with data leadership, data engineers, and data scientists, making it a brilliant environment to naturally level up your data modelling skills.
- Modern Workspace: Work from our brand-new, state-of-the-art office in Hereford city centre, designed specifically for teamwork and collaboration.
