As a Generic Theatre Nursing Assistant you will work as part of the theatre team to ensure the safety of theatre patients. You will do this by managing portering duties with safe efficient practices, collecting and delivering blood products in a timely manner with the appropriate understanding to its use, application and storage, process specimens and ensure the theatre team can facilitate the specimen collection process and safeguard the running of theatre by managing patient requirements pre and post operatively including the management of theatre waste.

The post holder will be expected to participate fully in their personal development and review process in order to achieve the knowledge and skills required for the post.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensure patients a fully prepared for transfer to theatre, including phoning the wards if required to check patients are fully prepared.
  • Provide the safe escort of patients between the wards and theatres and accompany patients into the Anaesthetic room whilst undergoing Anaesthesia and act as a chaperon.
  • Assist patients in their mobility requirements, help move and position appropriately to maximise their physical comfort.
  • Prepare individual patients and the environment to ensure effective movement and/or handling procedures. Participate in Moving and Handling activities.
  • Actively support and assist in alleviating distress and anxiety of patients or carers, consistent with their personal beliefs and preferences
  • Assist in the correct procedure of duties relating to last offices for deceased persons. Ensure that all religious and cultural wishes, obligations are adhered with.
  • When necessary initiate and assist with basic cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
  • At the delegation of the registered practitioner, and according to Trust Policy, transfer the patient from the waiting area/ward to the anaesthetic room. After Surgery transfer the patient back under the supervision of a registered practitioner.
  • At the delegation of the registered practitioner assist with the patients in the recovery unit and extended recovery unit (ERU) delivering care including helping with hygiene needs and providing beverages and meals if required.
  • Preparation of theatres for clinical procedures.

On joining MFT, you’ll be supported to develop your knowledge and skills through our Support Worker Development Programme for Nursing Assistants that includes completion of the Care Certificate for candidates who have not completed this previously. The great news is, the completion of the Support Worker Development Programme will give you the opportunity to progress into a Band 3 Nursing Assistantrole.

If you’re a more experienced Nursing Assistantseeking a new opportunity in a Band 3 role, you’ll undertake a skills analysis when you start to identify any gaps in your clinical skills knowledge needed for your role. You’ll then be supported to access relevant modules from the clinical skills programme to support your progression to a Band 3 post on completion.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Holds National Care Certificate or be willing to undertake and complete within 12 weeks of starting.
  • Will be required to undertake the Trust CSW Development programme and theatre competency-based programme

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience working in a healthcare, social care organisation/setting or service industry requiring people contact
  • Experience of working within a theatre environment.
