Job overview

This is a new post, introduced to facilitate succession planning within the Department of General Surgery, Wythenshawe Hospital. This post will be available with immediate effect. The post is for a Consultant in General Surgery; subspecialty interests in benign upper GI and HPB surgery would be welcomed. The unit provides elective and emergency general surgery, benign upper gastrointestinal, general and sub-specialist colorectal surgery. Minimally invasive surgery is well established, and we are keen to progress MIS Upper GI hiatal and diaphragmatic surgery.

Main duties of the job

Applications are sought from candidates who will help deliver General Surgery in both emergency and elective settings. The appointee will join the current team of surgeons where there is a tradition of support for Consultant colleagues. There is an established habit of “mentoring” new colleagues.

The unit currently runs a 1 in 11 consultant of the week duty rota, responsible for emergency admissions. We also have an established Surgical Ambulatory Care Receiving Unit (SACRU) run by Advanced Care Practitioners supported by Consultants on a rota.
