The Role

The First Team Technical Scout plays a key role within Manchester United’s recruitment structure, supporting both immediate first‑team recruitment priorities and long‑term squad planning. The position is responsible for delivering evidence‑based player evaluation through the integration of video analysis, live scouting, data‑informed insights, and qualitative assessment across a dedicated positional market. Working closely with the Scouting and Data Science teams, alongside senior football staff, the successful candidate will identify, analyse, and contextualise player performance against the club’s tactical and positional requirements. Combining elite football knowledge with detailed analytical processes, the Technical Scout will deliver actionable insights to support recruitment strategy and decision‑making. A core objective of the role is to assess and clearly communicate a player’s current level, future potential, and overall suitability for Manchester United, while maintaining a deep understanding of the evolving global player market.

Key Responsibilities

  • Player Analysis & Recruitment Support
    • Manage and maintain responsibility for a dedicated positional market.
    • Deliver detailed video and data‑informed analysis on prospective player targets, alongside live scouting where required.
    • Assess and communicate player level, potential, and suitability for Manchester United.
    • Produce insights focused on tactical fit, strengths, weaknesses, performance trends, and long‑term development potential.
    • Support both immediate recruitment activity and long‑term squad planning processes.
    • Contribute directly to recruitment discussions and strategic squad‑building initiatives.
  • Market Analysis & Research
    • Develop detailed positional market overviews and succession‑planning insights.

The Person

  • Proven experience within a professional football club in a Technical Scouting or Performance Analysis role.
  • Strong technical and tactical understanding of football, with the ability to analyse and contextualise individual player performance across varying playing styles and competitions.
  • Experience assessing player level, future potential, and suitability within an elite recruitment environment.
  • Ability to produce high‑quality video analysis, player reports, presentations, and telestration outputs to elite professional standards.
  • Proficient in industry‑standard scouting and analysis platforms, including Hudl, Wyscout, and professional video analysis tools such as Angles and Tactic.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate data‑informed insights into scouting and recruitment workflows.
  • Excellent organisational, analytical, and communication skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate complex football insights clearly to technical and senior stakeholders.
  • Able to operate effectively both independently and collaboratively within a fast‑paced, high‑performance environment.
  • Flexible and willing to work evenings and weekends in line with the football calendar.
  • Strong commitment to continuous learning, innovation, and process improvement.

Desirable

  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in Sports Science, Performance Analysis, or a related discipline.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud software, including Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Photoshop.
  • FA Talent ID and/or coaching qualifications, or progress towards completion.
