The Home Office works to build a safe, fair and prosperous UK. We achieve this through our work on counter-terrorism, policing, crime, drugs policy, immigration and passports.

Home Office Digital designs, builds and develops services for the rest of the department and for government. Every year our systems support up to 3 million visa applications, checks on 100 million border crossings, up to 8 million passport applications and deliver 140 million police checks on people, vehicles and property.

An Infrastructure Engineer supports and maintains infrastructure solutions and services as directed and according to departmental policy and Home Office strategy. You will work in a team of Infrastructure Engineers making sure services are delivered and supported as required. You work with and support third parties to provide infrastructure services and with technical architects to translate architectural designs into operations.

This role is part of the Networks and Infrastructure (N&I) team within the Home Office, which is responsible for delivering and maintaining the organisation’s core infrastructure. The team handles a diverse range of systems, concepts, and technologies. This includes public cloud infrastructure deployment and management and Windows & Linux server technologies. They also manage server and service monitoring, infrastructure as code, immutable infrastructure, automation and serverless compute as well as public cloud provided services across several major public cloud vendors. The team collaborates extensively with other traditional infrastructure teams for connectivity and services as well as application teams to move legacy workloads to the cloud.

This post offers the opportunity for skilled, ambitious applicants to work with a range of these technologies, particularly in public cloud, to develop their skills and career in Infrastructure Engineering within a large enterprise environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Building, configuring, transitioning, administering and supporting infrastructure technologies and solutions such as: compute, storage, networking, physical infrastructure, software, cloud, commercial off the shelf (COTS) and open-source packages and solutions.
  • Resolving technical problems, ensuring that technical solutions continue to meet business requirements taking accountability for actions taken and decisions made.
  • Identifying the correct procedures and appropriate channels for resolution and monitor resolution activities and progress updates to users.
  • Investigating faults in systems, processes and services, and advise on the implementation of appropriate solutions and preventative measures.
  • Working collaboratively to ensure that a set of IT products, suppliers and vendors come together to deliver an IT service.
  • Using logical designs created by technical architects and required standards, methods and tools (including prototyping tools where appropriate) to build infrastructure solutions.
Working Pattern

This role is available on a full-time basis with the option of compressed hours working. This role is also suitable for part-time working hours, with a minimum requirement to work 4 days / 29 hours per week due to business requirements. Like many organisations we need to maintain our services 24/7, therefore, on occasions there may be a requirement to work out of hours, for which you will be paid an additional allowance.

Travel

Occasional travel may be required to other Home Office locations on an ad hoc basis. Any associated costs will be reimbursed in line with Home Office policy.

Person specification

You’ll have a demonstrable passion for Infrastructure Engineering, with the following skills or some experience in:

  • Understanding of core technical concepts relevant to the role, with the ability to apply these to build effective and reliable solutions.
  • Awareness of the full-service life cycle, including design, development, delivery and ongoing operation, with a commitment to ensuring quality at each stage.
  • Ability to analyse complex problems, breaking them down into component parts to identify root causes and contribute to effective resolution.
  • Clear and adaptable communication skills, with the ability to present verbal and written information in a way that meets the needs of different users and responds appropriately to stakeholder feedback.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, building constructive working relationships with diverse teams across different locations, disciplines and technologies.
  • Practical experience with AWS and/or Azure public cloud infrastructure, or identity and access management (IAM) technologies.
  • Understanding of systems development, including the processes, tools and principles involved in creating, improving or maintaining technical solutions.
