The Trainee Solicitor position is a 2‑year fixed‑term contract with Manchester City Council’s Legal Services team. This role supports the council’s legal work across multiple groups and provides training to meet SRA requirements.

Training & Development

The role follows a structured programme in line with the Solicitors Regulation Authority. You will undertake 6‑month rotations in the following groups:

  • Governance Legal Group
  • Children’s and Family Legal Group
  • People, Place and Regulatory Legal Group
  • Regeneration Legal Group

You’ll work with internal and external clients, gaining experience in contentious and non‑contentious matters.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice and support to internal teams and external partners.
  • Prepare and draft legal documents, correspondence and court documents.
  • Manage a caseload under supervision from Legal Services Group Leaders and the Training Principal.
  • Participate in skill‑building sessions and learning workshops.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of the Legal Practice Course (LPC) by the start of the contract.
  • Academic background, excellent communication skills, and a genuine interest in local government and public law.
  • Ability to adapt, take initiative and work effectively in a team‑based environment.
  • Professionalism and discretion in handling sensitive information.
  • References (two) with a minimum 3‑year history.
