This role offers the chance to make a difference to the lives of young people with learning disabilities by giving them support to make the transition into adulthood, to be inspired by the possibilities for work, both paid and voluntary and to gain confidence in their own skills and abilities.
Manchester City Council's STEPs team delivers study programmes for young adults aged 16-25 with learning difficulties and disabilities. The programme aims to help young people with learning disabilities grow in all areas of their lives—not just in the classroom. We support them to build confidence, learn everyday skills, make friends, and prepare for work or independent living, based on what matters most to them.
The post holder will work within a small team of Job Coaches, led by a Work Placement Coordinator to provide an introduction to job skills to the young people. They will support young people in high-quality work experience placements providing real workplace experiences, working alongside employees and managers. The post holder will support learners with additional needs to access work-related learning and complete work placements. The role focuses on providing practical, day‑to‑day support to learners in line with agreed support plans, under the guidance of tutors and managers, to help learners develop employability skills, gain experience of the workplace and progress towards greater independence.
About the Candidate
We would love to hear from you if you have experience of:
- Using your excellent communication skills to relate to a range of different people, including employers and young people with learning disabilities, to support young people in work placements and to ensure they get the most positive impact from them.
- Clear prioritisation of work, setting targets for yourself to demanding timescales.
- Identifying potential problems or errors when considering responses to situations; looking to establish the true position before considering action or advice.
- The ability to organise your own activities to support an excellent programme for our young people to inspire and equip them into work and volunteering.
- Willingness to apply for an enhanced DBS check which is a requirement for this role.
