About the Role
9 Month Fixed Term Contract
Working Hour: This role is a Hybrid role 2/3 days in Edinburgh; it also has the flexibility in start and finish times.
Main Purpose:
The Health and Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations within the workplace by developing policies, conducting risk assessments, carrying out workplace inspections and delivering workstation assessments. Reporting to the Health & Safety Manager, you will help develop Health & Safety advice to AEGON UK, deliver clear, expert advice on health, safety and environmental matters across the business. As a Health and Safety Officer, you will support our operational teams by ensuring the effective implementation of our health, safety, and wellbeing strategies across a regional remit. You will drive proactive safety measures, ensure legal and ISO compliance, promote a strong safety culture, and support continuous improvement across multiple contracts and sites. Due to its wide geographical remit, this role may require adhoc site visits around the UK.
Key Responsibilities:
- Take charge of all emergency provision (Fire Evacuation, First aid and Fire Wardens).
- DSE assessments (face to face & via Teams).
- Take charge of the functions SharePoint where customers register and complete workstation assessment, self-assessments, report accidents, young people and work experience students and eyecare applications.
- Investigating accidents, incidents, and near misses to identify risks and implement preventative actions.
- Collaborating with site managers and supervisors to maintain a safe and compliant working environment.
- Controlling registers for Risk Assessments, CoSHH assessments, DSE and training.
- Evac chair training – co-ordinate sessions not required to be a trainer.
- Participation in H&S Steering group – tri annual Chair.
- First Aider & MHFA forum.
- Pregnant Workers Risk Assessments.
- Promote a strong safety culture, and support continuous improvement across multiple contracts and sites.
- Carry out site safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments (RA), reporting findings and tracking corrective actions.
Essential Hiring Criteria:
- A recognised Health and Safety qualification (NEBOSH National General Certificate or equivalent).
- H&S experience in a similar role.
- Knowledge of ISO certifications and auditing systems.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to positively influence others.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong influencing and coaching capabilities.
- Attention to detail and strong report-writing skills.
- Proactive and solutions-focused mindset.
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities across multiple sites.
- Experience in a health and safety role, including DSE.
- A strong knowledge of current health and safety legislation and how to apply it in practical settings.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train and influence others.
- A proactive mindset with strong problem-solving abilities.
- Relevant qualifications (NEBOSH or similar) are highly desirable.
