Building Surveyor / Clerk of Works in Huddersfield

Huddersfield Full-Time On-site
Management Recruitment Group

The University of Huddersfield is seeking an experienced and proactive Building Surveyor / Clerk of Works to join its Estates & Facilities team and play a key role in the delivery and quality assurance of building projects across its estate.

This is an excellent opportunity to combine professional building surveying with hands-on project and construction oversight, making a visible contribution to the quality, safety and development of the University estate. Reporting to the Senior Project Manager, this is a varied client-side role combining building surveying, project delivery and Clerk of Works responsibilities. You will manage smaller-scale building projects while providing quality and compliance oversight across larger new-build and refurbishment schemes.

The role:

  • Design and manage minor building projects, producing specifications, feasibility studies and technical drawings.
  • Support projects through procurement, contractor appointment, delivery and handover.
  • Undertake site inspections, monitoring workmanship against drawings, specifications and relevant regulations.
  • Identify defects and non-compliance and manage snagging and remedial works.
  • Monitor health and safety requirements, including RAMS, permits to work and safe systems.
  • Work closely with contractors, consultants and University stakeholders, reporting on progress, risk and quality.

We are looking for a building surveying professional with experience of condition surveys, defect diagnosis, technical documentation and contract administration, alongside practical experience of site inspection, quality assurance and snagging. You will have a relevant degree or equivalent experience, strong knowledge of construction methods and standards, and an understanding of CDM, Building Regulations and the Building Safety Act. Familiarity with JCT or NEC contracts would also be valuable. You will combine strong technical judgement with excellent communication skills and the confidence to constructively challenge poor workmanship or non-compliance.

Closing date for applications: 8th November 2026.

Interviews will be held on 18th November
