Man Group is a global alternative investment management firm focused on pursuing outperformance for sophisticated clients via our Systematic, Discretionary and Solutions offerings. Powered by talent and advanced technology, our single and multi-manager investment strategies are underpinned by deep research and span public and private markets, across all major asset classes, with a significant focus on alternatives. Man Group takes a partnership approach to working with clients, establishing deep connections and creating tailored solutions to meet their investment goals and those of the millions of retirees and savers they represent.
The global IDI team spans Hong Kong, Sofia, London and now Boston. The team is responsible for implementing all new business and portfolios (funds, Separately Managed Accounts (SMAs), and investment strategies), maintaining the integrity of systematic models, and steering the long-term development of our trading initiatives. Our mission is to ensure every quantitative strategy is implemented with precision and aligned with its investment objectives, from initial research idea through to the last trade.
The problems the team solves are diverse, complex, and high-impact. The team is the primary responder when production issues halt the investment managers, requiring rapid diagnosis and resolution without introducing new risks. The team are the operational architects who translate a researcher’s ideal strategy or portfolio into a robust, scalable solution, balancing speed, resilience, and business logic. The team also works closely with other areas such as Portfolio Management and Trading to explain why an algorithm and portfolio optimizer generated specific trades. Finally, we partner with technologists to help design trading architecture that is automated, scalable, and transparent enough for manual intervention when necessary.
This role offers exceptional exposure. Man Group's flat structure means your work is widely visible across the group, you will be working with portfolio managers, quantitative researchers, product structuring specialists, and traders, with the opportunity and expectation to contribute, propose solutions, and make decisions regardless of seniority. You’ll be supported throughout and as you build confidence, you will represent the global IDI team on cross-departmental working groups and present findings directly to senior management.
This is not a generic graduate scheme where you tour the business and hope to find a home. You are hired explicitly as a future IDI Analyst. However, to be effective in IDI, you must deeply understand the teams you will be interacting with every day. For this reason, your first 18 months are structured to give you a 360-degree view of how a systematic hedge fund operates:
- Months 1–6 (IDI Team): You begin in IDI, shadowing our core operations. You will learn how we monitor daily portfolio management, implement new research, and drive strategic projects. You will not be making production trading decisions yet; instead, your focus will be on deep-dive data analysis, automating processes, and helping to build out our emerging AI capabilities.
- Months 7–18 (Rotations): You will complete three tailored 4-month rotations across teams that are key stakeholders of IDI—such as Business Management, Investment Risk, Execution Analytics and Trade Operations & Middle Office Accounting. You are there to understand their pain points, their workflows, how IDI can better support them and build lasting human relationships.
- Month 19 onwards: You return to IDI permanently, bringing back the cross-functional knowledge necessary to steer complex, cross-departmental implementations.
Throughout this 18-month journey, you will be supported by a dedicated mentor who will guide your technical and professional development.
RESPONSIBILITIES (FIRST 6 MONTHS)
During your initial 6 months within the IDI team, you will not be expected to run the trading system or make production decisions. Instead, you will focus on building your knowledge and delivering value through:
- Shadowing tasks across the IDI team, including day-to-day portfolio management monitoring, implementation, analytics, and strategic projects.
- Automating existing processes and streamlining daily investment management workflows.
- Conducting deep-dive data analysis with autonomy, providing meaningful business insights to senior management and improving processes for the team.
- Building out tooling and the emerging AI capability of the team.
- Developing a thorough understanding of complex systems and interactions, including the ability to sort through dynamic datasets to analyse key indicators.
- Contributing to AHL's overall Investment and Data Implementation effort by collaborating with other teams across AHL.
