About Malted

Malted builds next-generation specialised intelligence for financial institutions. Our products combine advanced language technology with deep domain understanding to help firms make faster, more accurate and more accountable decisions. We focus entirely on financial services, working with leading banks, insurers and regulators to turn complex reasoning into clear, dependable intelligence. Our flagship product, Malted Pulse, provides AI that reasons transparently and can be inspected, governed and tuned to organisational policy. We’re a highly technical team based in Edinburgh, combining deep machine learning experience with a rigorous approach to product design and engineering. We believe that making AI systems understandable isn’t just an ethical necessity, it’s a competitive advantage.

About the team

You’ll be joining one of our product squads, responsible for building and evolving the systems that power Malted Pulse. The team designs and operates the systems that enable our customers to deploy reasoning agents at scale, with reliability, traceability and performance at the core.

What you’ll do

As a Staff Engineer, you are a multiplier for any team. You own ill-defined, highly ambiguous projects, driving forward not only the implementation of work but also the design of the solution. You help set the technical direction of our platform, operating across multiple teams to define problem spaces rather than just solving them. You bridge gaps between engineering, product, commercial, and leadership to drive technical initiatives that matter to the business over the next 12-24 months.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design of elegant solutions to complex problems and create roadmaps to tackle them incrementally.
  • Drive technical discussions and architecture decisions that shape the platform’s evolution across the wider business.
  • Set technical vision and drive significant architectural decisions that hold together as the business grows.
  • Work directly with company leadership on technical strategy and have real influence on company direction.
  • Own problems that nobody else has been able to crack.
  • Improve how engineering operates, from incident management processes to how teams are structured.
  • Mentor Senior Engineers and help them grow into leadership, acting as a role model and coach for all engineers.
  • Bridge gaps between engineering, product, commercial, and leadership.

Who you are

You’re a seasoned engineer who enjoys solving complex problems with clarity and precision. You bring a level of experience and pattern recognition that allows you to set the standard for how engineering thinks and works at scale.

Minimum requirements:

  • Eligible to work in the UK.
  • Extensive professional software engineering experience with a demonstrable impact on the quality and suitability of a team's work.
  • Exceptional technical depth with the ability to engage credibly on any part of the stack.
  • Proven ability to identify, coordinate and deliver highly impactful solutions to complex problems.
  • Strong experience in Python (or other language) and deep familiarity with AWS or another major cloud platform.
  • Experience shaping product direction and identifying high-level opportunities.
  • Expertise in designing distributed systems and setting technical standards others follow.
  • Strong understanding of the security and compliance landscape to advise the business on technical risk.
  • Proven ability to anticipate technical challenges before they surface and address them before they become blockers.

Working at Malted

We’re based in Edinburgh and work from the office three days a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). The rest of the week is work from home. We keep a high bar for technical quality but a low tolerance for ego. You’ll join a team that values precision, humour and intellectual honesty.

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary
  • Pension and stock options
  • Medical and life insurance
  • Hybrid working and ad-hoc flexibility
  • The chance to work on one-of-a-kind products at the forefront of the AI industry
  • Professional development and growth opportunities
  • A collaborative, inclusive workplace that promotes innovation and teamwork
  • Free snacks and drinks
  • Social events and company outings
