Malted builds specialised intelligence for financial institutions. Our products combine advanced language technology with deep domain understanding to help firms make faster, more accurate and more accountable decisions. We focus entirely on financial services, working with leading banks, insurers and regulators to turn complex reasoning into clear, dependable intelligence. Our flagship product, Malted Pulse, provides AI that reasons transparently and can be inspected, governed and tuned to organisational policy.
We’re a small, highly technical team based in Edinburgh, combining deep machine learning experience with a rigorous approach to product design and engineering. We believe that making AI systems understandable isn’t just an ethical necessity, it’s a competitive advantage.
About the team: You’ll join the Pulse product team, responsible for building and evolving the systems that power Malted Pulse. The team designs and operates the distributed infrastructure that enables our customers to deploy reasoning agents at scale, with reliability, traceability and performance at the core.
What you’ll do: As an Engineering Manager, you’ll be responsible for building, leading and scaling a high-performing engineering squad working on Malted Pulse. You’ll balance people leadership, delivery ownership and technical decision-making, helping to drive a world-class engineering culture. You’ll lead a cross-functional squad spanning frontend and backend software engineering, machine learning and design, working closely with leadership to turn strategy into execution. You’ll remain technically close to the work—reviewing designs, unblocking hard problems and setting a high bar for software quality.
- Lead and support a cross-functional squad spanning frontend and backend software engineering, machine learning and design.
- Own delivery for key parts of Malted Pulse, ensuring work is well-scoped, prioritised and executed.
- Drive technical direction and architectural decisions in collaboration with senior engineers.
- Help create a world-class engineering culture where teams can do their best work, balancing autonomy with accountability.
- Ensure engineering best practices across the team, including code quality, testing, security and reliability.
- Translate strategic goals into clear technical plans and execution roadmaps.
- Support hiring, onboarding and team scaling as Malted grows.
- Remain hands-on with the codebase as a player–coach, contributing to design, implementation and reviews alongside the team.
Who you are: You’re an experienced engineering leader who enjoys developing people as much as software systems. You’re comfortable making decisions with incomplete information and thrive in environments where clarity, trust and ownership matter. You care deeply about technical quality, client outcomes, and building a world-class AI-enabled product.
Eligible to work in the UK. 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including experience in a technical leadership or management role. Proven experience leading and developing engineers, through mentorship, feedback and performance management. Experience delivering and operating production backend systems at scale. Strong experience with Python (or similar) and modern backend technologies. Deep familiarity with AWS or another major cloud platform. Experience with distributed systems, APIs and production infrastructure. Working knowledge of containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines. Strong understanding of system design, reliability and engineering trade-offs. Comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative startup environment.
Preferred requirements: Experience managing teams in enterprise or regulated environments (e.g. finance, insurance). Background in deep tech, data-intensive or ML-enabled products. Experience scaling teams or platforms through periods of rapid growth. Strong understanding of security and compliance considerations in distributed systems. MSc or higher degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field. Familiarity with ML concepts and deploying or integrating ML systems. Experience contributing to or supporting open-source projects.
Working at Malted: We’re based in Edinburgh and work from the office three days a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). The rest of the week is work from home. We keep a high bar for technical quality but a low tolerance for ego. You’ll join a team that values precision, humour and intellectual honesty.
