Peatland Officer- WildLand Nature

Full-Time No working from home possible
M

At WildLand, conservation is the Heart story, and our why, protecting our most valuable asset and restoring these landscapes to their former richness. Our Estates reach from the far wilds and crofting communities in the North, to the shores of Loch Ness and the ancient woodland of the Cairngorms. Within these landscapes we are managing extensive and historical peatlands- an ongoing project of regeneration.

This role will see you working onsite across Sutherland and the Cairngorms, along with time in office. You’ll be hands on in leading the planning and delivery of our peatland restoration programme, liaising with both internal and external stakeholders and acting with an informed, forward thinking and solutions focused mindset.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work as part of the nature team to continuously build positive partnerships with colleagues and local communities, providing practical advice on its benefits for climate, biodiversity and nature recovery.
  • Coordinate site access, surveys and reviews, continuously identifying restoration opportunities and discussing long-term management to improve peatland condition and associated habitats across the WildLand estate.
  • Carry out or commission surveys to allow creation of peatland restoration projects, factoring in all constraints and obligatory compliance.
  • Manage applications and bids for funding in line with the WildLand conservation goals, along with subsequent required reporting.
  • Engage with the procurement and tendering of restoration works, working with the Nature team in the region, contractors and Government bodies.
  • Share knowledge and encourage learning among colleagues, contractors and land managers, supporting the development and trialling of innovative restoration techniques.
  • Take ownership of long-term monitoring and improvement of existing and completed peatland restoration projects.
  • Always work in line with best-practice, sharing this knowledge with all WildLand teams and contractors, and encouraging continuous improvement.

Who You Are

You will be confident and well-versed as an applied practitioner in Peatland restoration and planning, with a can-do approach to solving problems. You will thrive in working with our passionate and committed team, focused out outcomes over process, and happy to be hands-on with the delivery. You’ll be used to working on multi-agency delivery, comfortable with managing contractors and working to deadline, along with being comfortable with a range of mapping programmes.
