The Environmental Compliance Officer ensures that all waste management activities comply with environmental legislation, site permits, and industry standards. The role focuses on monitoring environmental performance, managing compliance documentation, conducting inspections, and supporting continuous improvement to minimise environmental risk and ensure operational excellence. This position works closely with operational teams, quality, and health & safety to maintain legal compliance and uphold responsible environmental practices across all sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Regulatory Compliance & Permitting: Ensure full compliance with environmental permits, licences, exemptions, and consents. Monitor legislative changes relevant to waste management (UK Environmental Permitting Regulations, Duty of Care, waste classification rules, etc.). Maintain accurate and up-to-date environmental compliance registers. Liaise with regulators (Environment Agency, local authorities) and support site inspections.
  • Environmental Monitoring & Reporting: Conduct routine environmental inspections (e.g., emissions, drainage, odour, noise, dust, surface water, groundwater). Manage sampling and monitoring programmes in line with permit conditions. Maintain environmental records and produce monthly/quarterly compliance reports. Support carbon monitoring and sustainability reporting.
  • Operational Oversight: Ensure waste handling, storage, and disposal processes comply with regulatory and permit requirements. Verify correct waste classification (EWC codes), segregation, and documentation. Investigate environmental incidents, near misses, and non-conformances.
  • Incident & Non-Compliance Management: Lead or support investigation of spills, pollution events, complaints (odour, noise, dust), and breaches. Implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to prevent recurrence.
  • Continuous Improvement & Sustainability: Identify environmental risks and opportunities for improvement. Support environmental improvement initiatives (e.g., resource efficiency, emissions reduction, waste minimisation). Assist in maintaining and developing environmental management systems (ISO 14001).

Personal Experience

  • Qualifications and Training: Experience in an environmental compliance or environmental management role (preferably within waste management, recycling, industrial, or environmental services) (essential). Strong understanding of UK waste legislation, environmental permitting, Duty of Care, and relevant regulations (essential). Experience working with regulators (e.g., Environment Agency) (essential). Knowledge of environmental monitoring techniques and reporting requirements (essential). Waste classification and hazardous waste experience (desirable). Spill response and environmental incident investigation training (desirable).
  • Experience: Knowledge of carbon accounting or sustainability frameworks (desirable). Data analysis skills for environmental reporting (desirable). ISO 14001 experience (internal auditor or similar desirable) (desirable). Strong investigation, reporting, and communication skills (desirable).
