The Opportunity
We are seeking a highly experienced Environmental Compliance Manager to take responsibility for ensuring that our European operations comply with all applicable environmental legislation. This role sits within the UK business but carries pan-European responsibility, with a core focus on monitoring, interpreting, and implementing regulatory requirements, supporting subsidiaries, and minimising legal and regulatory risk. A key aspect of the role is to coordinate, consolidate, and report environmental compliance information to both European headquarters and Global HQ in Japan — providing clear visibility of compliance status, risks, and actions across multiple jurisdictions. This is a critical position for a professional who thrives on regulatory precision, structured coordination, and legal compliance excellence, with a clear mandate focused on minimum necessary actions required by law. If you thrive on regulatory complexity, enjoy working across jurisdictions and cultures, and want to make a tangible impact on how a global business manages its compliance obligations, this is the role for you.
Why Join Makita?
- A Brand You Can Trust: Join a global leader in high-performance power tools and outdoor equipment.
- Career Development: We believe in developing our people. With Makita, you’ll have access to ongoing training, career growth opportunities, and support to help you reach your full potential.
- Work-Life Balance: We offer competitive salaries, benefits, and the opportunity to work with a team that values collaboration and flexibility.
- Be Part of the Team: Our culture is innovation, and a commitment to excellence—everything we do is driven by our commitment to our customers and products.
What You Would Be Doing
- Regulatory Monitoring & Compliance: Monitor and assess environmental legislation and reporting requirements across the EU and relevant national jurisdictions; Identify regulatory developments impacting products, operations, facilities, and the supply chain; Interpret and translate regulatory requirements into clear, practical guidance for local entities; Support implementation of legally required environmental measures; Participate in European trade associations on environmental and sustainability topics.
- Internal Coordination: Act as the central point of contact for environmental compliance across European subsidiaries; Coordinate with designated environmental representatives in each local entity; Establish structured processes for sharing regulatory updates and compliance data; Support local management in understanding obligations, responsibilities, and reporting deadlines; Facilitate communication between European entities and headquarters.
- Risk Assessment & Legal Compliance: Assess risks associated with new and evolving environmental regulations; Recommend proportionate, legally required actions to ensure compliance; Maintain compliance tracking systems and regulatory action plans; Support preparation for regulatory inspections and audits; Contribute to the reduction of regulatory risk exposure across the organisation.
- Reporting & Documentation: Maintain accurate records of applicable regulations and compliance status; Coordinate mandatory environmental reporting across European operations; Prepare internal reports and compliance summaries for senior management; Support documentation required for regulatory submissions.
- Customer & Business Support: Support business units in responding to customer enquiries related to environmental compliance; Assess whether customer requirements are legally mandatory or commercially driven; Escalate non-regulatory requests with significant business impact; Provide clear, reliable compliance input to support commercial activity.
