Make A Smile is looking for a dedicated and detail‑driven Treasurer to join our team and help us continue bringing joy to children across the UK. If you have a head for numbers and a heart for making a difference, this could be the perfect role for you. The Treasurer plays a crucial role in strengthening Make A Smile’s ability to operate safely, sustainably, and with maximum impact.

As a charity that relies on donations, fundraising, and careful budgeting, strong financial stewardship is essential to everything we do. The Treasurer provides the oversight, structure, and accountability that ensures our funds are managed responsibly and in line with both legal requirements and our constitution. This role directly supports the long‑term stability of the organisation. By monitoring income and expenditure, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring compliance with HMRC and charity regulations, the Treasurer protects Make A Smile from financial risk and helps us meet our obligations as a registered charity.

Their work ensures that every pound raised by our Chapters is collected securely, allocated appropriately, and used to deliver the greatest possible benefit to the children and families we support. Beyond compliance, the Treasurer plays a strategic role in shaping how the charity grows. Through budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting, they provide the information and insight needed for trustees and Chapter teams to make informed decisions. Their guidance helps us plan events, allocate resources, and identify opportunities for grants or funding that can expand our reach. By offering clear financial advice, the Treasurer empowers the organisation to operate confidently and sustainably. Ultimately, this role ensures that Make A Smile can continue its mission with integrity and efficiency.

With strong financial leadership, we can focus on what matters most: bringing joy, support, and magical experiences to children who need them. The Treasurer’s contribution underpins every activity we deliver, making them an essential part of our ability to create lasting positive impact.

What will you be doing?

  • Provide strong, reliable financial leadership that supports both the day‑to‑day running of Make A Smile and the long‑term sustainability of the charity.
  • As a trustee, oversee the charity’s financial health, ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, and help the organisation use its resources effectively to maximise impact.
  • Maintain accurate financial records, monitor income and expenditure, and ensure that funds raised by our Chapters are collected, stored, and distributed appropriately.
  • Prepare regular financial reports for the Board, highlighting risks or opportunities.
  • Manage interactions with regulatory bodies such as HMRC, ensuring all required submissions are completed accurately and on time and maintaining full compliance with charity law and financial regulations.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning; advise on grant applications; assess the financial viability of new initiatives; ensure funds are used effectively to support the organisation’s mission.
  • Provide clear financial information to trustees and Chapter teams to enable informed decision‑making and effective budgeting and resource allocation.
  • Collaborate with others, be organized, proactive, and aligned with the charity’s values to safeguard the charity’s future and maximise impact.

What are we looking for?

  • Experience managing finances within a charity, business, or similar organisation with a strong understanding of financial governance and compliance.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks; ability to navigate the system independently, maintain accurate records, and generate clear financial reports for the Board.
  • Experience with other accounting software is beneficial but not essential.
  • Excellent attention to detail; ability to liaise with regulatory bodies such as HMRC and ensure ongoing legal and financial compliance.
  • Strong communication skills; ability to present financial information clearly to trustees and enable informed decision‑making; provide financial advice and assist budgeting and evaluating new initiatives.
  • Collaborative, organised, proactive, trustworthy, and committed to making the best use of Make A Smile’s resources to maximise impact.
