Major Recruitment are currently recruiting for a Design Manager in Carlisle to work on a High Voltage / Substations project.

Location: Carlisle (Minimum 3 days/week on-site)

Rate: ~£400/day (Inside IR35)

Contract Duration: 3-6 Months

Location: Rockcliffe, Carlisle Cumbria CA6 4EZ

About the Role

Looking for an experienced Design Manager to take ownership of end-to-end design activities for a major High Voltage substation project (Project Harker) in Carlisle. Joining a leading transmission & distribution business, you will act as the key technical link between engineering teams, project managers, commercial leads, and client representatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design Delivery: Lead and monitor the design schedule to ensure all deliverables hit key milestone dates.
  • Quality & Technical Assurance: Ensure all engineering outputs align strictly with National Grid (NG), SSE, and CDM safety standards.
  • Commercial Control (NEC): Manage design variations, Early Warnings (EWNs), and Compensation Events (CEs) to control cost impacts.
  • Stakeholder Coordination: Lead design review meetings and resolve Requests for Information (RFIs) and Technical Queries (TQs) between site teams and external designers.
  • Design Safety: Enforce safety-by-design principles across both temporary and permanent works.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of Design Management or Senior Engineering experience in the energy sector.
  • HV Substation experience (UK electricity transmission sector) is essential.
  • Strong working knowledge of National Grid processes, standards, and assurance gateways.
  • Proven experience managing NEC contract change control processes.
  • Must be willing to commit to at least 3 days per week on-site in Carlisle.
