Location: Stanford-le-Hope, Essex SS17
Salary: 15.91 PAYE
Contract: Rolling contract (No fixed end date)
The Role
We are seeking a detail-oriented Support Assistant to join the Environment Department within the Port Health Service. This is an entry-level administrative post critical to the flow of EU cargo, providing essential clerical support to Official Veterinarians and Port Health Officers. You will be the first point of contact for the office, handling a high volume of technical information regarding health certificates and documentation standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Documentation: Carry out documentary checks on imported food consignments and process cleared Health Entry Documents (CHED).
- Data Management: Input and maintain records in internal and external systems such as PHILIS, IPAFFS, CNS, or DESTIN8.
- Communication: Answer incoming calls and respond to queries regarding the status of imported cargo and charging procedures.
- Logistics: Arrange daily lab sample collections, liaise with couriers, and manage incoming/outgoing post.
- Office Support: Maintain filing systems, update equipment inventories, and assist with general housekeeping of food sample storage.
Working Pattern & Logistics
- Initial Training: 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM (Office-based) for the first 4-6 weeks.
- Post-Training Shifts: You will move into a rotation covering shifts between 6:00 AM and 10:00 PM.
- Remote/Night Work: Includes remote night shifts (10:00 PM - 6:00 AM) approximately 5 days a month.
- Transport: A full UK Driving Licence and access to a car are mandatory. There are no public transport links to the site.
Requirements
- Skills: Excellent IT skills (MS Office) and a high level of literacy and numeracy.
- Aptitude: You must be a quick learner capable of absorbing large volumes of technical information.
- Experience: While entry-level, previous experience in a clerical/administrative role or a Port Health environment is highly beneficial.
- Attention to Detail: This is critical. Candidates will be required to pass a "spot the difference" style competency test during the interview.
