The Opportunity
We are currently recruiting for an experienced and proactive Yard Supervisor to join an operation in Sittingbourne. This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced yard environment, takes pride in maintaining high safety standards, and has the confidence to lead by example. You will play a key role in ensuring the yard operates safely, efficiently and professionally, while helping to deliver an excellent experience for customers and colleagues.
The Yard Supervisor will oversee the day-to-day flow of work through the yard, supporting the Yard Operatives and ensuring incoming and outgoing work is handled correctly, safely and to the required standards.
Key Responsibilities
- High standards of health & safety, housekeeping and professionalism are maintained at all times.
- Yard operations run efficiently, with work moving smoothly through the pre and post processes.
- Customers and visitors receive a professional, helpful and welcoming service.
- All work is correctly labelled and accompanied by the appropriate paperwork.
- Loads are built safely and securely, with banding applied where required to both incoming and outgoing work.
- Yard Operatives are supported, directed and deployed effectively according to operational requirements.
- Team members remain flexible and assist across different areas of the yard when required.
- Any safety concerns, damaged or unsuitable work, weight discrepancies or other issues are reported promptly to the Operations Manager.
- Visitors comply with site requirements, including wearing the correct PPE, signing in and being safely directed to the appropriate loading area.
- Incoming work is inspected for suitability for quality control, including checking for:
- Adequate vent and drainage holes
- Paint or other contaminants
- Items requiring powder coating or shot blasting
- Oversized work that may not be suitable for the relevant process
- Outgoing work is checked to ensure it has the correct paperwork, is handled safely and meets the required quality standards.
- Any damage, discrepancies or quality concerns are identified and escalated without delay.
What We're Looking For
- Previous experience in a yard, warehouse, manufacturing, engineering, galvanizing or similar industrial environment.
- Experience supervising, coordinating or leading a small team would be highly advantageous.
- A strong understanding of health & safety and safe working practices.
- The confidence to take responsibility and make decisions in a busy operational environment.
- Excellent attention to detail, particularly when checking work, paperwork, loads and quality.
- A professional and customer-focused approach.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with colleagues, customers and site visitors.
- A flexible attitude and willingness to get involved and support the wider team.
- The ability to work in a physically demanding, outdoor/yard-based environment.
- A proactive approach to identifying and reporting issues before they become problems.
