An established international manufacturing organisation is seeking an experienced Electrical & Instrumentation Engineer to support the safe, reliable and efficient operation of a continuous and batch-process manufacturing facility.

The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining and improving electrical, instrumentation and control systems across the site, ensuring high levels of equipment availability, process reliability and regulatory compliance. The position combines hands-on engineering support with project delivery, continuous improvement and control system development.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, this role will work closely with Operations, Maintenance, Production and HSE teams to optimise plant performance and support future growth initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical & Instrumentation Systems

  • Maintain, troubleshoot and improve plant electrical and instrumentation assets
  • Support the reliability and performance of process equipment including:
  • Pumps and pumping systems
  • Control valves and actuated valves
  • Mixers and agitators
  • Conveyors and material handling systems
  • Tank farms and storage systems
  • Packaging and filling equipment
  • Utility systems including compressed air, cooling water and process heating systems
  • Carry out fault finding on electrical, instrumentation and control systems
  • Diagnose failures using electrical drawings, loop diagrams, P&IDs and control narratives
  • Develop and execute preventative and predictive maintenance strategies for critical assets

Automation & Control Systems

  • Support and maintain PLC, HMI and SCADA systems
  • Perform diagnostics, modifications and optimisation of control programs
  • Support control systems based on Rockwell Automation platforms, including:
  • ControlLogix
  • CompactLogix
  • FactoryTalk View
  • Ethernet/IP networks
  • Investigate process control issues and implement corrective actions
  • Assist with control system upgrades, migrations and cybersecurity initiatives
  • Maintain backup and disaster recovery procedures for automation systems

Instrumentation

  • Calibrate, maintain and commission instrumentation including:
  • Pressure transmitters
  • Flow meters
  • Level instruments
  • Temperature sensors
  • Load cells
  • Analytical instrumentation
  • Verify instrument accuracy and integrity to support process quality and safety requirements
  • Manage instrument calibration records and compliance documentation
  • Support SIL, functional safety and process safety activities where applicable

Reliability & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead root cause investigations relating to electrical, instrumentation and automation failures
  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, energy efficiency and production performance
  • Participate in reliability studies, asset criticality reviews and maintenance optimisation initiatives
  • Support implementation of CMMS-based maintenance strategies and KPI reporting

Engineering Projects

  • Deliver E&I projects from concept through commissioning
  • Produce and review:
  • Electrical schematics
  • Instrumentation schedules
  • Cable schedules
  • Functional design specifications
  • Cause and effect matrices
  • Control philosophies
  • Manage contractors and vendors during installation and commissioning activities
  • Support capital investment projects and plant expansion programmes

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all work is conducted in accordance with site safety procedures and engineering standards
  • Participate in risk assessments, HAZOPs and Management of Change (MOC) processes
  • Act as an authorised person for electrical isolation and permit-to-work activities where required
  • Support compliance with relevant electrical, machinery and process safety legislation

Skills & Experience

Essential

HNC/HND or Degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Control Engineering or a related discipline.

  • Proven experience within a process manufacturing environment such as:
  • Pharmaceuticals, Chemicals, Resins, Petrochemicals, Composites, Coatings, Food & Beverage, Industrial Manufacturing
  • Strong electrical fault-finding and troubleshooting skills
  • Experience with industrial instrumentation and calibration
  • Experience supporting PLC and SCADA systems
  • Knowledge of motor control centres, VSDs, soft starters and industrial power distribution
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, P&IDs and control documentation
  • Familiarity with preventative and predictive maintenance methodologies
  • Strong problem-solving and root cause analysis skills

Prefered

  • Experience with Rockwell Automation systems
  • Knowledge of process control strategies and batch manufacturing systems
  • CompEx, ATEX or hazardous area experience
  • 18th Edition Wiring Regulations qualification
  • Functional Safety / SIL awareneness
  • Project engineering or commissioning experience
  • CMMS experience (SAP, Maximo, IFS or similar)
