Qualified Senior Tax Adviser
London | up to Β£100,000 per annum + excellent benefits | Permanent
A specialist tax advisory practice is seeking an intellectually curious and highly motivated Chartered Tax Adviser to join its close-knit team undertaking complex tax advisory and contentious work.
This is an opportunity for an experienced tax professional to develop their expertise in high-value, technically challenging matters, working alongside experienced tax counsel. The role offers exposure to sophisticated tax issues involving high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals, business owners, public figures, senior executives, trustees, funds and their professional advisers.
The successful candidate will undertake detailed legal and technical research, prepare comprehensive written advice and contribute to the resolution of novel and complex tax issues. This is a specialist advisory position suited to someone who has already developed a strong foundation in tax advisory work and is looking to deepen their technical expertise.
THE ROLE
-
Undertake independent research into complex, novel and high-value UK tax issues using online legal databases and printed legal and technical resources.
-
Draft detailed tax advisory reports, distilling complex legal and technical concepts into clear, accurate and practical advice.
-
Work on private client tax matters involving residence and domicile, remittances, double taxation treaties, trusts, estates, offshore structures and UK property investments.
-
Advise on corporation tax and VAT matters affecting owner-managed businesses, investment companies, partnerships and limited liability partnerships.
-
Undertake contentious tax work involving HMRC enquiries, assessments, penalties, appeals, statutory reviews and tax clearances.
-
Work closely with experienced tax counsel and colleagues in a dynamic team, contributing to complex advisory assignments under time pressure.
-
Engage directly with clients and their professional advisers, including solicitors, accountants, trustees and wealth managers.
YOUR BACKGROUND
You will be a UK Chartered Tax Adviser with a strong academic record, excellent analytical ability and a genuine interest in complex tax law and advisory work.
You are likely to demonstrate:
-
CTA qualification with at least three years' post-qualification tax advisory experience.
-
Experience gained within a professional services environment, such as an accountancy practice, law firm, wealth management business, trust corporation or family office.
-
A strong academic background, including an undergraduate degree at 2:1 level or above, alongside A-Level and GCSE qualifications or their equivalents.
-
Demonstrable experience preparing detailed tax advisory reports and synthesising extensive research into clear, reasoned conclusions.
-
Strong analytical, research and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and exercise sound judgement.
-
A good working knowledge of the English legal concepts underpinning tax law, including contracts, trusts, partnerships, companies, insolvency and land law.
-
The ability to manage demanding assignments under time pressure, often with minimal supervision.
Full membership of STEP in England and Wales would be desirable but is not essential. An English LLB or GDL qualification would be advantageous.
YOUR TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
Candidates should have demonstrable experience in at least one, and ideally several, of the following areas:
-
Direct taxation: Income tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax, ATED, SDLT, tax reliefs, exemptions and anti-avoidance provisions.
-
Private client and international tax: Residence and domicile, remittances, double taxation, UK and offshore trusts, funds, foundations, estates, companies and property or investment-holding structures.
-
Corporate and business taxation: Corporation tax, VAT, owner-managed businesses, investment companies, partnerships, LLPs and corporate restructuring.
-
Tax disputes and administration: HMRC enquiries, assessments, penalties, appeals, statutory reviews, statutory and non-statutory clearances, Code of Practice 9, GAAR and international information exchange obligations.
THE OPPORTUNITY
This is an opportunity to move beyond routine tax compliance and develop a specialist advisory career focused on complex, bespoke and high-value tax matters.
You will work closely with experienced tax counsel, undertake intellectually demanding assignments and build expertise across sophisticated areas of UK taxation. The role will suit someone who enjoys detailed research, rigorous analysis and producing high-quality written advice, and who is motivated to develop their capabilities within a specialist advisory environment.
The position is office-based and requires the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
