Founded by former Michelin-starred chef Paul Rhodes in 2003, Paul Rhodes Bakery has built a strong reputation as the go-to supplier of quality handcrafted sourdoughs, cakes and pastries in the capital. Today, as the bakery heads towards twenty-five years in business, the goal remains the same and this ambition underpins everything we do.
Paul Rhodes Bakery is seeking an experienced Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer to take ownership of all engineering and maintenance activity across our London bakery operations. This is a standalone, multidisciplinary role, acting as the central point of control for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and general hands-on maintenance. You will be supported by an existing handyman and electrician, but accountability for engineering standards, priorities, and performance will sit firmly with you.
This role is not purely reactive. While rapid response to breakdowns is essential, the successful candidate will play a key role in shifting the business towards a proactive, preventative maintenance culture, aligned with the operational demands of food production. You will report directly to the Head of Production and sit as part of the wider management team.
Key Responsibilities- Own and manage all maintenance and engineering activity across the bakery.
- Respond promptly to mechanical and electrical breakdowns, systematically fault-finding and identifying root cause.
- Design, implement, and manage a robust planned preventative maintenance (PPM) schedule.
- Maintain production equipment to ensure it operates safely, efficiently, and reliably.
- Diagnose and repair faults across bakery machinery including mixers, dividers, provers, ovens, refrigeration, glazing machines, flow-wrap machines, slicing machines, conveyors, motors, control panels, and pneumatic systems.
- Identify recurring issues and implement long-term engineering solutions rather than short-term fixes.
- Work closely with Production management team to plan maintenance activity and minimise downtime.
- Use maintenance management software called MaintainX for tracking and managing all tasks.
- Understand and monitor equipment performance metrics, including overall equipment effectiveness.
- Own and maintain the on-site workshop to a high standard.
- Manage spare parts inventory, ordering, and budget control.
- Act as point of contact for external contractors and equipment suppliers.
- Support installation, commissioning, and modification of new or upgraded equipment.
- Ensure all work complies with food safety, health & safety, and statutory requirements.
- Maintain clear communication with the Head of Production and wider management team on site issues and risks.
- Proven experience as a Maintenance Engineer within food manufacturing, bakery, or FMCG environments.
- Bakery experience is highly desirable; strong food production experience is essential.
- Minimum 2+ years’ experience in a multi-skilled maintenance engineering role.
- Confident working independently and prioritising workload without day-to-day supervision.
- Strong electrical and mechanical fault-finding capability.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and pneumatic drawings.
- Experience with preventative and reactive maintenance methodologies.
- Familiarity with maintenance management systems.
- Strong troubleshooting capability on electrical equipment.
- Knowledge of HACCP principles and food safety requirements.
- Location: London based: Lassell St, Greenwich, SE10 9PJ.
- Position: Full-time, Permanent.
- Benefits include free & discounted bakery products, shop discount, free birthday cake, company events, referral bonus, cycle to work scheme, additional holiday allowance, and paid breaks.
