Magnus Opifex Seven provides specialist technical and compliance support to organisations operating across the UK construction sector.

We are expanding our passive fire protection capability and are looking for three experienced technical professionals who can develop and independently review evidence-based fire performance assessments for construction products and systems.

THE ROLE

As a Senior Technical Consultant, you will prepare and peer-review technical assessments for passive fire protection applications that fall outside directly tested or classified configurations.

Your work will be based on relevant primary fire-test evidence, applicable extended application rules, product and system knowledge, and a clear understanding of fire-test behaviour and failure modes.

This is a senior technical position. It is not primarily a fire risk assessment, installation, sales or routine site-inspection role.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare and peer-review Basic, Intermediate and Complex technical assessments in accordance with the PFPF Guide, BS EN 15725 and applicable EXAP standards.
  • Analyse full fire-test reports, classification reports, field-of-application documents and supporting technical evidence.
  • Assess proposed changes against tested configurations, including their potential impact on integrity, insulation, stability and applicable failure modes.
  • Produce clear, evidence-based and auditable reports covering scope, supporting evidence, assumptions, limitations, drawings, specifications and technical justification.
  • Determine when the available evidence is insufficient and further testing or specialist input is required.
  • Provide technical advice across passive fire protection systems, design interfaces and non-standard construction details.
  • Work with clients, manufacturers, designers, contractors, fire engineers, certification bodies and test laboratories.
  • Support design reviews, technical meetings and the accurate transfer of fire-safety information into project and Regulation 38 records.
  • Maintain appropriate competency, CPD and conflict-of-interest records.
  • Contribute to Magnus Opifex Seven’s technical procedures, assessment templates and quality-management processes.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • An engineering or related technical qualification equivalent to Incorporated Engineer level or above, together with at least three years of recent, relevant fire testing and assessment experience; or more than six years of relevant testing and assessment experience through the non-graduate route.
  • A broader track record in passive fire protection, normally including at least five years of relevant industry experience.
  • Demonstrable experience authoring and/or independently reviewing technical assessments based on fire-test evidence.
  • First-hand experience analysing complete fire-test reports, including test observations, failure modes and the limitations of the evidence.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant fire resistance test, classification and extended application standards, including BS EN 13501, BS EN 15725, applicable BS EN 1366 standards and EXAPs.
  • A working understanding of current UK Building Regulations and fire-safety guidance, including Approved Document B and the transition from legacy BS 476 classifications.
  • Detailed expertise in at least two passive fire protection product or system areas.
  • Excellent written technical English and the ability to explain complex conclusions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Sound professional judgement, impartiality and the confidence to decline work where evidence or competence is insufficient.
  • RELEVANT PRODUCT AND SYSTEM EXPERIENCE

Experience may include

  • Penetration seals and firestopping systems
  • Linear joint seals
  • Fire-rated boards and compartmentation systems
  • Structural steel and concrete fire protection
  • Drylining, partitions, ceilings and SFS systems
  • Cavity barriers
  • Ducts and dampers
  • Fire-resistant glazing or doorsets
  • Spray-applied fire protection

Candidates are not expected to be specialists in every category. The depth and limits of individual competence must be demonstrable.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE

  • MEng, MSc or equivalent postgraduate qualification in Fire, Civil, Structural, Materials or Building Engineering.
  • IEng or CEng registration, or active progress towards professional registration.
  • Membership of the Institution of Fire Engineers, such as AIFire E or MIFire E.
  • Previous technical experience with a passive fire protection manufacturer, UKAS-accredited test laboratory, certification body, specialist consultancy or major contractor.
  • Experience witnessing fire tests or contributing to product development and test programmes.
  • Steel fire protection inspection training.
  • Experience working within an ISO 9001-aligned technical assessment process.
  • Awareness of the developing BS 8623 framework.
