Are you ready to shape how complex waste is managed safely and responsibly during decommissioning? This is an opportunity to play a central role in delivering practical, compliant waste management solutions on a live site, where your expertise directly supports safe progress towards Care and Maintenance. Working within a focused and experienced Waste team, you will help guide how both radioactive and non-active waste is handled, transported and improved. The role goes beyond day-to-day delivery, giving you the space to influence strategy, introduce better approaches and raise standards across the site.
If you bring experience from another highly regulated sector, your perspective will be valued in strengthening and evolving how waste is managed.
What will you be doing
- You will take ownership of key waste management activities, ensuring operations are safe, compliant and aligned with the site’s decommissioning goals.
- There is a strong leadership element, supporting the team, stepping in for the Head of Waste when needed, and ensuring the right planning is in place to meet delivery targets.
- Alongside operational delivery, you will play a key role in improving how waste is managed across projects. This includes shaping waste strategies, providing clear technical guidance, and working closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure expectations are understood and met.
- Lead delivery against waste shipment targets set out in the Joint Waste Management Plan.
- Provide technical support and clear waste management guidance to site projects.
- Drive continuous improvement through audits, investigations and new approaches.
- Develop and apply Best Available Techniques to reduce waste impact on the environment.
Who are we looking for
- You bring a strong technical foundation in waste, environmental or engineering disciplines, along with practical experience applying this knowledge in a regulated environment.
- You are confident providing advice, making decisions and working across teams to balance safety, compliance and delivery.
- This role would suit someone who enjoys improving systems and processes, not just maintaining them.
- You are comfortable stepping into a leadership position when needed, supporting others and raising standards, while keeping a clear focus on safe and efficient outcomes.
- HND or equivalent (Level 5) in a scientific, environmental or engineering discipline.
- Solid understanding of environmental standards, policies and legislation relating to waste management.
- Experience applying waste management principles within a regulated industry, nuclear experience helpful but not essential.
- Aware of transporting dangerous goods or radioactive materials would strengthen your application.
