The Logistics Specialist is responsible for coordinating day-to-day transport, export, and warehouse logistics activities, supporting both UK and international shipments. The role plays a key part in ensuring efficient, cost-effective movement of goods by reviewing sales orders, pre-booking transport, creating loading and inventory plans, and acting as a central liaison between Customer Service, Planning, Warehousing, suppliers, and third-party logistics providers. Working in a fast-paced environment, this role requires strong organizational skills, commercial awareness, and a high level of attention to detail, particularly in relation to transport costs, export documentation, and supplier performance.
Responsibilities
- Review sales orders and pre-book inbound and outbound shipments in collaboration with Customer Service and Planning teams.
- Coordinate UK and export shipments across road, sea, and air freight, including groupage consignments.
- Create detailed loading plans to optimise vehicle and container utilisation.
- Update and maintain the daily warehouse loading schedule to support efficient operations and communicate changes quickly and effectively.
- Create inventory picking instructions in line with shipment and warehouse requirements.
- Obtain and compare carriage quotes to support the Supply Chain and Commercial teams.
- Maintain and update transport and shipping cost spreadsheets.
- Monitor and support ongoing improvements in shipping costs for export and UK special consignments.
- Maintain strong commercial awareness when reviewing transport options and supplier charges.
Export & Customer Support
- Act as a point of contact for customer queries relating to export procedures and transport arrangements.
- Ensure correct application of Incoterms and compliance with export documentation and shipping requirements.
- Support the preparation and accuracy of export paperwork and carriage documentation.
Supplier & 3PL Management
- Maintain, monitor, and continuously improve supplier and carrier performance.
- Track third-party logistics (3PL) performance concerns and implement robust countermeasures where required.
- Liaise with freight forwarders and transport providers to ensure service levels, cost control, and operational reliability.
Administration, Reporting & KPIs
- Produce and maintain KPI reporting related to transport performance, cost, and service levels, including On Time Delivery reports and monitoring.
- Maintain accurate logistics records, reports, and spreadsheets to support operational and audit requirements.
- Support continuous improvement through data analysis and performance tracking.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- Excellent IT skills, particularly Microsoft Excel.
- Customer-focused mindset with strong communication skills both verbal and written.
- Commercial awareness and cost-control focus.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure in a transport environment.
Technical & Industry Knowledge
- Understanding of Incoterms.
- Knowledge of road, sea, and air freight operations.
- Experience with groupage shipments.
- Working knowledge of export paperwork requirements and international shipping procedures.
Qualifications
- GCSE English & Maths (A–C or equivalent).
- Industry-recognised qualification in Logistics or Supply Chain (e.g. IoSCM, CIPS) desirable.
- Certificate in Export Documentation – desirable.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a transport or logistics environment.
- Fluent English (written and verbal).
