Job Responsibilities:

  • We are seeking a motivated and hands‑on individual to join our manufacturing team as a trainee manufacturing toolmaker.
  • This is an opportunity to develop skills and gain hands‑on experience in a multi‑function shopfloor supporting mechanical/pneumatic fixture building activities and mechanical integration tasks for robotic assembly cells, and also supporting tooling/die improvements in both high pressure die casting and press tooling projects.
  • The individual will be working alongside Manufacturing Toolmakers, gaining knowledge and experience in a Toolroom and machining environment.
  • In addition to hands‑on experience in the workplace, the candidate will be required to attend a recognised training provider, where the successful candidate will work towards the completion of the required academic and practical qualifications to support the opportunities for progression into a fully qualified toolmaker role.
  • Enabling the Operations function within the MAA manufacturing process by supporting material preparation, handling, cutting, and basic machining (Non‑CNC) to support both mechanical and tooling tasks.
  • Supporting mechanical installation tasks with an ability to interrogate CAD data and 2D drawings to deliver required build content.
  • Development of core Die and toolmaking skills to deliver casting die insert disassemble/re‑assemble process inclusive of frame cleaning and preparation and development of core press die tooling knowledge.
  • Support and develop skills in die spotting processes inclusive of preparation, blue spot reading, and implementing the changes required to die surfaces.
  • Support the site’s health and safety culture to drive zero harm initiatives.

The Role Involved But Is Not Limited To:

  • Preparation and organisation of materials to support MAA Operations in both automation (Jig, fixtures, assembly cell build requirement), tooling projects and other fabrication processes.
  • Operation of manual machines inclusive of lathes, grinders, saws, milling machines—where required under toolmaker supervision.
  • Assist in tool fitting, polishing and bench work tasks under toolmaker supervision.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings and the interrogation of CAD data to extract details for mechanical fixture and tooling builds.
  • Kitting organisation and preparation for both automation and tooling projects.
  • Jig, Fixture, other fabrications and Assembly cell build processes.
  • Die Disassemble, Preparation, Assembly and re‑fitting activities on casting and press tooling.
  • Learn and Develop safe working practices on manual machines.
  • Ensuring adherence to the BOM for assembly fixture builds.
  • Collaborate and communicate with toolmakers, engineers, and senior staff to meet project timelines.
  • Use of hand tools under Toolmaker supervision.
  • Involvement in problem‑solving (CI) activities and development of skill to support business improvement philosophy and MAFACT requirements.
  • To adhere to all Health & Safety responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
  • Participate in training sessions and development programs as and when required.
  • Any other duties as reasonably requested.

Essential:

  • Shopfloor / Operative / Material Handling experience.
  • Worked within a manufacturing facility which incorporated automated assembly or hydraulic and power press environments.
  • Experience of undertaking basic mechanical installation tasks.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical tools / workshop machinery and practices.
  • Proficient in the use of manual lifting equipment (pump truck).
  • Proficient in the use of cutting machinery.
  • Overhead crane experience.
  • Use of IT packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, Teams).
  • Organising and feeding manufacturing processes.
  • Awareness of BOM process and outputs.

Desirable:

  • Capable of driving a FLT (training will be given).
  • Awareness and experience of working with automated and robotic processes.
  • Experience of contributing to business CI initiatives (Internal/external).
  • Current enrolment or intention to enrol in an engineering or manufacturing trainee programme/apprenticeship.
