The Mechanical Design Engineer position will play a key role within CCUK developing, designing Robot Grippers, CNC Fixtures, stillages, heat treat racks and be involved in Mechanical design simulation with robotic systems for automation. This position involves supporting the full design process, from conceptualisation to prototyping, testing, and final integration, while ensuring the systems meet performance, safety, and cost-effectiveness standards. The role requires strong problem-solving skills, up-to-date knowledge of CAD technologies, and a strategic mindset to anticipate industry trends and contribute to the continuous improvement of robotic & Automation systems.

The role involves but is not limited to:

  • Be responsible for the design phase of Projects, focusing on the equipment layouts, Robot Grippers, CNC Fixtures, stillages, heat treat racks and considering operator ergonomics.
  • To review and buy off designs and be involved in Layout & Design simulation.
  • Project management of suppliers. Interpret customer requirements and develop concept designs into a robust solution.
  • Apply Design for Manufacture (DFM) principles to simplify the product structure, reducing the number of components and assembly operations required, thereby enhancing the manufacturing process.
  • Attend buy off events and oversee sampling and commissioning at suppliers and home line also owning and manage Pre and Final acceptance tests.
  • Generate and develop CAD models using SolidWorks or CATIA & Produce 2D product, tooling, fixture, equipment drawings to support manufacturing, quality and engineering activities.
  • Part Feasibility reviews and to apply design for Manufacturability (DFM) principals to evaluate product designs.
  • Complete understanding of part tolerances, dimensional capability statistics and GD&T.
  • Generate SOR, RFQ to support engineering and quoting activities.
  • Support continuous improvement activities through effective use of 3D and 2D CAD to propose product design changes and tooling improvements.
  • Participate in root-cause analysis and implement countermeasures.
  • Maintain master drawings with clear revision control.
  • Validation of FEA analysis during buy off Process, work closely with departmental personal to capture lessons learned.
  • Maintain a continuous improvement mindset, seeking out the latest advancements in assembly automation and integrating them into the design process to stay ahead in the competitive automotive industry.
  • Be creative in your approach to mechanical design in order to gain a competitive edge.

EXPERIENCE:

Essential:

  • Front end design experience.
  • 2D and 3D CAD Software – SolidWorks or Catia or similar.
  • Design Simulation.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Packages.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and build relationships with customers.
  • Ability to own and drive projects.
  • Engineering background.
  • Technical knowledge – Mechanical Design.

Desirable:

  • HNC Apprenticeship or equivalent either in Mechanical or Electrical Eng’g.
  • Root Cause Analysis.
  • DFMEA and PFMEA.
  • Previous Automotive experience.
  • Understanding of Aluminium Cast part manufacturing processes.

Work Environment:

Plant conditions necessitate exposure to heat, cold, dust, hot objects, and loud noises within our manufacturing environment. Full Health and Safety training and PPE provided for all conditions. Position will involve overseas travelling and working outside “normal” UK working hours, to cover time zone differences.
