Overview
This role is responsible for the provision of a high‑quality, evidence‑based and specialist programme of psychological assessment and support for people dealing with cancer. The successful candidate will contribute professional expertise to the Maggie’s multidisciplinary team and integrated programme of cancer support, aligning with the Clinical and Counselling Psychology Role Expectation Guidelines.
Key deliverables include contributing to the Maggie’s organisational programme of psychosocial research, working closely with the Centre Head to develop and promote the programme of support, and ensuring high standards of psychological leadership and governance within the centre.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide psychological leadership and governance of psychological thinking, recording and activity within the centre team.
- Deliver specialist psychological assessment and intervention for people living with the impact of cancer, utilising a range of psychotherapeutic formats such as individual, couples, family, group work, support and networking groups, workshops and other psycho‑educational formats.
- Apply theoretical and evidence‑based practice in programme provision.
- Record and report all data related to own work.
- Supervise centre staff on psychological aspects of programme provision and facilitate staff support and supervision meetings.
- Collaborate with the Centre Head on training and development of staff and volunteers.
- Ensure the development and articulation of psychological best practice within the centre.
- Develop and assure quality, evaluate Maggie’s programme in collaboration with the Centre Head at local and national levels.
- Manage psychological risk within the centre.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Postgraduate doctoral‑level training in clinical or counselling psychology (or equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) and eligibility for chartered status with the BPS.
- Experience contributing to and working within a multi‑disciplinary care team.
- Teaching, training and consultation to professional or non‑professional groups.
- Familiarity with models of psychological wellness, the psychology of health, normal adjustment to illness and quality of life concepts beyond the medical model.
- Demonstrable skills in design and conduct of audit and research.
- Expert communication skills, able to convey complex, highly technical and clinically sensitive information to clients, families, carers and a range of lay and professional persons.
- Project management and IT skills that support qualitative or quantitative research.
