As a Cancer Support Specialist within Maggie’s you will actively support centre visitors to understand and articulate their cancer related concerns. Through ongoing work with individuals, families and groups you will help them to engage with Maggie’s psychosocial programme of support, ensuring people feel welcomed, valued, and heard. You will maintain relationships with centre visitors and facilitate ongoing exploration of the full range of Maggie’s support services. Initially based at Maggie’s Wirral, the role will transition to Liverpool upon completion of the new centre build.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead delegated aspects of the provision of an integrated cancer support programme, creating welcoming conditions and maintaining ongoing relationships with visitors.
  • Elicit cancer‑related concerns and the psychological and emotional state of self‑referring visitors, providing Level 3 psychological support and relevant clinical information.
  • Liaise with colleagues to ensure appropriate internal referrals and optimal use of Maggie’s support programme.
  • Lead delegated aspects of the psychosocial and psycho‑educational components, including relaxation and stress‑management programmes and facilitation of network groups.
  • Support the Centre Head in monitoring and identifying service utilisation issues.
  • Ensure the centre environment and resources comply with Maggie’s policies and procedures, delivering support effectively and efficiently.

Skills, knowledge and expertise

  • Registered nursing degree (or equivalent) with at least three years post‑qualification experience in oncology nursing or a related setting.
  • Graduation with a postgraduate qualification in a relevant field is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated experience in person‑focused, care support and teamwork within a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Broad and up‑to‑date clinical knowledge of cancer and strong interpersonal skills to assess support needs and elicit concerns.
  • Well‑organised, emotionally sensitive and resilient, capable of managing demanding, emotionally intensive work.
